ABSTRACT: Dr. Mary Velasquez is Associate Dean for Research in the School of Social Work, Director of the Center for Social Work Research, and Director of the Health Behavior Research and Training Institute. Her area of specialty is the development and implementation of interventions using the Transtheoretical Model of Change and Motivational Interviewing. Dr. Velasquez will present her recent research, which uses motivational interviewing in a variety of health behavior interventions including HIV prevention, prenatal health, alcohol abuse, smoking cessation, and prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Dr. Velasquez is principal investigator for Project TTM, a group-based cocaine treatment study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and for Project CHOICES, a fetal alcohol prevention study funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Velasquez is an internationally recognized trainer in Motivational Interviewing and in the application of the Transtheoretical Model to health behaviors.
