The Mission of the Center for Health Promotion Research is
to Improve the Health of Underserved People Through Applied Research
This Center is funded for a second five years, beginning September 2004,
by the National Institute of Nursing Research/National Institutes of
Health to foster health promotion and disease prevention research endeavors
in underserved populations. This Center thus addresses a major goal
of Healthy People 2010: to reduce disparities in health.
The Specific Aims of CHPR are:
- Maintain and enhance a Center for Health Promotion and Disease
Prevention Research for Underserved Populations (CHPR) within the
formal structure of the School of Nursing at The University of Texas
at Austin, to include core staff, services, and advisory and executive
councils/committees;
- Develop, refine and implement community-based intervention research
that is theory driven and culturally competent to decrease health
disparities and promote health among underserved populations (e.g.,
minorities, low income individuals, persons with chronic disabling
conditions, children/adolescents, the elderly);
- Explore the application of emerging technologies and intervention
research methods to promote health and prevent disease among underserved
populations;
- Expand interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaboration among
nurse researchers and other investigators studying health promotion
and/or disease prevention;
- Disseminate findings on health promotion and disease prevention
in underserved populations to nursing and other scientists, clinicians,
and policymakers; and
- Translate findings on health promotion and disease prevention in
underserved populations for clinicians and consumers, including research
participants and other members of underserved populations, to enhance
clinical practice and health decision-making.
