2008 CHPR Faculty Fellowship Recipient
Dr. Sandor Dorgo, Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at El Paso, is the 2008 CHPR Faculty Fellowship recipient. Dr. Dorgo's area of research interest is in the physiological effects of physical training for people of all ages, and for his fellowship project he developed and submitted a NIH SC2 grant proposal, "The Application of Peer Mentoring in a Fitness Program for Hispanic Older Adults". Dr. Hirofumi Tanaka, CHPR Center Investigator and Associate Professor of Kinesiology and Health Education in the College of Education here at UT-Austin, mentored Dr. Dorgo for his CHPR fellowship work.

2007 CHPR Faculty Fellowship Recipient
Dr. Mary Hoke, professor and department head at New Mexico State University, is the 2007 CHPR Faculty Fellow. Dr. Hoke's work focuses on the development of interventions to assist rural and underserved Mexican American adults (primarily women) in improving their weight and nutrition health practices. Dr. Lorraine Walker, a CHPR Core Director and Center Investigator at the UT - Austin School of Nursing, will mentor Dr. Hoke as she develops an NIH R15 proposal to be submitted in the spring of 2008.

2006 CHPR Faculty Fellowship Recipient

Dr. Noe Ramirez, associate professor of Social Work at The University of Texas - Pan American, is the 2006 CHPR Faculty Fellow. Dr. Ramirez's work focuses on the development of social work and health related activities and services in the Rio Grande Valley, especially those initiated as a result of Chicano activist movements. Dr. Yolanda Padilla, a CHPR Center Investigator at the UT - Austin School of Social Work, will mentor Dr. Ramirez as he develops his research in his focus area.

2005 CHPR Faculty Fellowship Recipient

CHPR’s annual Summer Research Fellowship (SRF) helps a faculty person at a key moment in his/her professional development – providing mentoring, money, and guidance by working directly with a CHPR Center Investigator. Dr. Sharon Thompson, assistant professor of health science at The University of Texas at El Paso, was the 2005 Summer Research Fellowship recipient. Her work centers on preventing substance abuse in Hispanic and low-income populations. Dr. Lori Holleran, a CHPR Center Investigator at the UT School of Social Work, mentored Dr. Thompson as she submitted an R21 NIH grant application entitled, “Effectiveness of Brief Alcohol Intervention Among Mexican College Students."
