Courses
Nurses must have a minimum level of knowledge and skill to appropriately respond to a disaster event, especially one involving mass casualties. Our target are community based nurses who vigilant for public health crises and can be called upon to helped overwhelmed local resources---hospitals, clinics, shelters, and long term care facilities.
We believe that nurses should have sufficient knowledge and skills to keep themselves and their families safe, to recognize potential for a mass casualty event, to provide basic and psychological first aid, to know who is in charge and to know what they do not know.
The curriculum at the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing has integrated emergency preparedness and response competencies for all undergraduate students. The three main courses are in public health, mental health and skills classes.
