Course Description

This practicum provides opportunities for students to apply public health nursing concepts, theories, and processes in the care of aggregates, and the total community. The aim of public health nursing is to partner with the community and its people to prevent illness, disability and disease, identify risk factors and promote optimal health. Assigned clinical experiences will assist students to develop skills in the practice of public health nursing. Emphasis is on interdisciplinary health care with at-risk aggregates in the community.

Course Objectives

Objective 1 - Assessment

Holistically assess the health status of an aggregate or community using data, community resources, input from the population, and professional judgment.

Objective 2 – Diagnosis

Analyze the assessment data collected to determine assets, opportunities and needs.

Objective 3 - Outcomes Identification

Participate with the community to identify expected health outcomes.

Objective 4 – Planning

Plan public health nursing interventions in collaboration with an aggregate or community to improve and maintain the health of populations.

Objective 5 - Assurance

Participate in assuring access and availability of programs, policies, resources, and/or services to the aggregate or community

Objective 6 – Evaluation

Evaluate changes in aggregate or community health status to determine effectiveness of interventions

Objective 7 - Ethics, Legal, & Professional Standards

Practice public health nursing with aggregates and communities that reflects ethical, legal, and professional standards of public health nursing.

Objective 8 – Professional Development

Demonstrate professional demeanor and development.
