Regional Hospital Disaster Exercise November 10, 2010

A Regional Hospital disaster exercise involving 19 hospitals in Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, and Taylor took place on November 10, 2010. This disaster exercise was the culmination of a yearlong planning effort by the Capital Area Public Health and Medical Preparedness Coalition (CAPHMPC) Exercise Planning Workgroup. The exercise combined a natural disaster with a biological event preceding the natural disaster and tested hospital preparedness objectives.

The School of Nursing provided guidance for the disaster exercise as a member of the exercise planning workgroup. Additionally, the “patient victim cards” for the exercise were produced from three years worth of patient profiles developed by SON faculty. Finally, four pre-nursing students volunteered as role players (patients) at one of the local hospitals on the day of the exercise.

This Regional Hospital disaster exercise was the third large disaster exercise the coalition has conducted and was the best so far!
