Nursing faculty and student spoke about the importance of disaster preparedness with Austin youth

Trish O’DayPatrick KopackoOn November 25, 2013, undergraduate student Patrick Kopacko and faculty member Trish O’Day MSN, RN, CNS, spoke to the Robotics Club at Kealing Middle School in Austin about disaster response. Kopacko and O’Day are both members of the UTSON Disaster Preparedness Committee.

Students at Kealing are participating in a competition and must devise a solution to assist with communication and logistics during a natural disaster. Kopacko described challenges, along with potential solutions, for medical personnel in responding to disaster scenarios; his background in disaster response duties in the Air Force and Texas Air National Guard was informative for the Robotic Club members.

Discussing the importance of disaster preparedness with youth was rewarding for us, said O’Day; these young teens can work to ensure the preparedness of their own families right now, and someday, our community.
