Biography

Dr. Clingerman, an Assistant Professor of Adult Health Nursing in the Division of Adult Holistic Health at the University of Texas at Austin, is developing a program of research focusing on health promotion and disease prevention among Mexican American agricultural workers. Dr Clingerman’s research has involved mixed methods that include qualitative and quantitative studies to better understand physiological, psychosocial, and behavioral aspects of stress and its effects on the health of these workers in and out of migration. Dr Clingerman’s initial investigation began as a qualitative study that lead to development of a situation-specific theory of migration transition and identified specific health concerns that included stress and type 2 diabetes (T2D) among agricultural workers. Additional research investigations have included exploring biomarkers of stress and T2D risk factors. More recent studies have identified agricultural workers experience sleep deprivation. Dr Clingerman’s research is working towards development of culturally sensitive and group specific interventions to that address T2D risk factors in this unique population. Dr Clingerman’s has also conducted cognitive interviews to refine a translated instrument of economic adequacy for use in conducting research with agricultural workers and other impoverished groups. Dr. Clingerman’s teaching expertise includes multiple undergraduate and graduate courses including ethics, culture, theory, and research methods.
