Biography

Nina Fredland, PhD, RN, FNP is an Assistant Professor.  She began her nursing career at Niagara University where she earned a BS in Nursing. She served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. Following military service she received an MSN from The University of Pennsylvania, and post Master’s education as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Texas Woman’s University where she taught nursing for almost twelve years. Her doctoral education obtained at Johns Hopkins University, School of Nursing focused her research on children and adolescents exposed to family, peer and community violence.

In the past Dr. Fredland used structural equation modeling techniques to predict the effect of violence on health outcomes. Dr. Fredland is currently collaborating with community agencies and schools in Central Texas to increase understanding related to youth violence including bullying and dating violence. Exposures and experiences, especially when cumulative, affect physical and mental health as well as behavioral outcomes including school performance. Her current project is a primary prevention intervention using interactive theater to nurture healthy relationships in middle school-age youth.
