Biography

Dr. McDougall's research program targets the frequent complaint of "memory loss." Over 20 years of systematic investigations, lead to the development of The Cognitive Behavioral Model of Everyday Memory (CBMEM), a theoretically based psychosocial intervention model oriented toward improving everyday memory and functional ability. The findings have been disseminated in over 100 published chapters and peer-reviewed interdisciplinary and nursing journals and 150 plus presentations in the community, and at regional, national, and international scientific meetings, such as the National Academy of Sciences. The research has been featured on The Today Show and in O, The Oprah Magazine.

The cognitive-behavioral intervention was tested in a 5-year NIA-funded study known in the community as SeniorWISE (Wisdom Is Simply Exploration). The research is being implemented within three new dimensions. Translation of SeniorWISE into rural communities throughout the State of Arkansas with Drs. Cornelia Beck & Delia West funded through the Centers for Disease Control. The examination of the biological underpinnings of cognitive impairment associated with aging and dementia with emphasis on studying the neural substrates of memory, language and executive function in clinical populations in vivo by utilizing functional neuroimaging (fMRI). Haley, A., Tanaka, H., Ress, D., & McDougall, G. J, are investigating cardiovascular health and brain function in Mexican-American adults at-risk for hypertension. Finally, SeniorWISE will be tested for its efficacy along with New Connections, a successful program in Austin developed for individuals diagnosed with early Alzheimer's disease and/or Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

Dr. McDougall's research and the various projects have been funded from the National Institutes on Aging, National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute of Nursing Research. In 2007, Dr. McDougall was an invited participant at the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative for the program entitled the Future of the Human Health Span: Demography, Evolution, Medicine, & Bioengineering. SeniorWISE has been awarded the status of Edge Runner (PDF) by the prestigious American Academy of Nursing.
