The Arc is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that creates opportunities for people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities to be included in their communities and to make the choices which affect their lives. The profit from sale of donated items is used for the Arc programs and services.
The Arc picks ups donations from your house. They take “gently used household items you no longer want or need. Yellow postcards are mailed to houses in different areas of town letting people know when a truck is scheduled to be in the neighborhood. Simply leave your donation in front of your residence with the yellow card on it. Deliveries are done in Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Buda, Kyle, and Westlake.
The donations are given to Thrift Town, where they are unloaded onto “carts”. Thrift Town, a for-profit business, purchase the items for its six Texas stores exclusively from The Arc of Texas at a contracted “per cart” price. The funds that Arc receives from the sale of these carts enable them to provide much needed programs and services to people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.
Interesting fact about clothes donations: Any clothing items not suitable for domestic retail sale are sold to rag brokers who sell them in other parts of the world or use them to make rags. So don’t throw away those shirts or slacks with holes in them.
If the Arc does not deliver in your area call them at 707-0008. They will arrange your pick-up with another zip code’s pick-up.
