The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed to provide the opportunity for advanced study in select areas of nursing science, professional foundations, related sciences, and modes of systematic inquiry related to advanced and specialized professional nursing practice. This program requires students to have a current Registered Nurse license and hold either a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, or a non-nursing baccalaureate degree and an Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma*. MSN students can choose from one of ten concentration areas on which to focus (click on the link for a program description and degree plan):

Each concentration area follows a designated plan of coursework. A Gerontology Portfolio may also be completed.

MSN Bridge Sequence

The MSN Bridge Sequence is designed for applicants to a MSN program who are RNs without a BSN, but who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing. Completion of the bridge sequence does not constitute earning a BSN, but includes core essentials of a BSN program. The applicant must satisfactorily complete, earn a C or better, in all the Bridge courses prior to beginning MSN course work. At least two of the following courses must be complete at the time of application with a commitment to complete the remaining two prior to beginning MSN course work the following fall semester.

  • Statistics (Upper Division)
  • N 377 Leadership & Management of Nursing Care
  • N 484Q Public Health Nursing OR
  • N 275 Public Health Nursing (may be available online) AND N 375 Public Health Practicum
  • N 264 Nursing Research (may be available online)
  • Note: Satisfactory completion of the Bridge courses does not guarantee admission to a graduate program in nursing.

These courses should be taken as a non-degree seeking graduate nursing student. Applicants to the MSN Bridge Sequence program may have to take these pre-requisite courses prior to notification of admissions to the degree program. Please go to Applytexas to complete the non-degree seeking student application.

Post-Master’s Certificate Program

The School of Nursing also offers the Family Nurse Practitioner and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner concentrations as Post-Master’s certificate programs designed for students already holding an MSN from an accredited institution. Post-Master’s Certificate Program students will complete the didactic and clinical hours necessary to take the national certification exam in their specialty area. They will not, howerver, earn a second MSN degree.

Gerontology Portfolio

A portfolio in gerontology consisting of courses and seminars in aging may be completed. Please visit Gerontology Portfolio for additional information.
