Top Story

SCHOOL OF NURSING RECEIVES AAMN AWARD
The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing has received the 2005 Best School or College of Nursing for Men Award for significant efforts in recruiting and retaining men in nursing.

DECEMBER 2005 CONVOCATION
The Spring Convocation was held on Friday, December 6, 2005 at the LBJ Auditorium. Of those graduating, 58 received their Bachelor of Science in Nursing, 4 received their Master of Science in Nursing, and 2 received their Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing. Jane Kass-Wolff (PhD), Ronda Schultz (Alternate Entry MSN) were named Outstanding Graduate Students, and Brooke Baker and Lori Molidor were named Outstanding Undergraduate Students. Dr. Sheri Innerarity, PhD, RN, CNS, FNP, Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing, served as Marshal. The Convocation address was given by Brigadier General (Ret.) William Bester, MSN, RN, CNAA, Professor of Clinical Nursing.

DIAGNOSING DISPARITIES: BREAST CANCER SCREENING TO SAVE AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN
In 2002, a group of women boarded a bus from Dallas to San Marcos to spend a day at the outlet malls. They came back armed with something of greater magnitude than new shoes and cropped pants. They were trained and ready to help women in their community get the mammograms and clinical breast exams that might save their lives.

NURSING RESEARCH RECEIVES $1.6 MILLION GRANT FOR MS QUALITY OF LIFE STUDY
Dr. Alexa Stuifbergen, associate dean of The University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing, has received a $1.6 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to continue her studies on improving the quality of life for persons coping with multiple sclerosis.

Faculty News

NEW FACULTY
We welcome the following new faculty: Sarah Allison, Sarah Blankenship, Kathy Bowman, Carol Cody, Judy Flanagan, Kelly Gettig, Anne Hagen, Lynn Hudson, Michael Limerick, Kara Moellenberg, Debbie Samoson, Ronda Schultz, Fran Sonstein, Pam Tanner, and Raquel Tanner.

HONORS
Dr. Eun-Ok Im, Associate Professor, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing during its 32nd Annual Meeting and Conference, November 12, 2005, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

TRANSITIONS
Dr. Bonnie Rickelman, Associate Professor, retired effective January 31, 2006, after 37 years of service to the School and to our students.

Ms. Rebecca Sutter, Instructor in Clinical Nursing, retired after 16 years of service to the School and to our students.

Dr. Rickelman and Ms. Sutter will be honored with a reception on May 3.

UPDATES
Erin Dickerman , BSN 2000, is currently living in Humble, Texas where she is Clinical Coordinator for the IT Division at Methodist Hospital at Willowbrook. Erin worked at Texas Children's Hospital after graduation as a Pediatric Heme/Onc and Bone Marrow transplant nurse for 3 years, after which she worked at MD Anderson as an Assistant Nurse Manager of their Pediatric and Adolescent wing.

Amy Word (Gluckman), BSN 1999, married in 2000. Her daughters Lauren Elizabeth and Makenzie Michele were born in 2001 and 2004, respectively. Amy works in labor and delivery at Medical City Dallas Hospital. She would love to hear from her classmates. If interested in contacting her, please call the school at 471-9906.

Lisa Bouvette Herder, BSN 1985, has been a certified Childbirth Educator for 14 years and also works in day surgery at Corvallis Clinic in Corvallis, Oregon.

Cybil Herring (Beyer), BSN 2003, is married and working in a level 3 NICU at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. She will return to school in the fall to begin a master's program in neonatal nursing. She loves her career and misses UT!

Elaine Doherty Leach, BSN 1975, is employed with the US State Department at the American Embassy in Kabul.

Audrey Schmidt , BSN 2004, is living in Maryland and working in the Cardiology Care Unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Steven G. Snyder, AEMSN 1996, is the Regional Occupational Health Nurse, Western Division, SCA Tissue North America LLC. He is responsible for integrated disability, wellness, and emergency response for their Converting and Paper Mill operations in Flagstaff and Bellemont, Arizona. Steven also shares safety and risk management responsibilities with other plant managers. In November, 2005, he was certified by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses as a Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist.

Lori Wolfe , AEMSN 1995, is on faculty at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in the Neonatal Nursing Specialty. She challenges the 1995 AEMSN class to send in their own updates!

HONORS
Dr. Frank Cole, PhD 1988, will be the recipient of the University's 2006 Outstanding Graduate Alumnus Award. One of his many outstanding achievements is the development of the first Emergency NP program. Look for more information on the UT website after the announcement has been made in May.

Dr. Michael Limerick, MSN 1996, PhD 2005, Assistant Professor in Clinical Nursing, has received a 2005 ONS Foundation Oncology Nursing Research Grant. The ONS Foundation awards these grants to principal investigators actively involved in some aspect of care, education, or research for patients with cancer.

Dr. Kathy Culpepper Richards, PhD 1993, was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing during its 32nd Annual Meeting and Conference, November 12, 2005, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

HELEN ERICKSON LECTURE SERIES IN HOLISTIC HEALING
Dr. Carla Mariano, RN, Associate Professor, Coordinator of the Advanced Practice Holistic Nurse Practitioner Program, Division of Nursing, New York University, and President of the American Holistic Nurses Association, will present "Ethics and Research within the Holistic Paradigm" at the 2006 Erickson Lecture on Friday, April 7, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. The Lecture will be held in the Lone Star Room in the Frank Erwin Center, 1701 Red River St. Parking is available.

HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS SPRING DIVERSITY SYMPOSIUM, April 17 and 28, 2006, co-sponsored by the School of Nursing. Information and registration is available online at http://www.stdavids-institute.com.

CAIN LECTURESHIP IN GENETICS
Dr. Ann Cashion, RN, Chair and Associate Professor, Acute and Chronic Care Department, Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow, Director of the Center for Health Evaluation and Lifestyle Promotion at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, will present "Genomic Research and Common Health Problems" at the 2006 Cain Lectureship in Genetics. The lecture will be held on Friday, April 28, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., in the Lone Star Room at the Frank Erwin Center, 1701 Red River St. Parking is available.

CONVOCATION
Spring Convocation will be held on Friday, May 19, 12:00 p.m. in the Bass Concert Hall.
