I would also like you to set aside 1-2 hours on Sunday afternoon, (Jan 25.) so that we can physically go to the hospital, but we can talk about that on Thursday. |

This course is required for completion of a baccalaureate of nursing (BSN) degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing. AE students may also take this course as an elective. Please review the "Syllabus" section of the UTTC Blackboard (BB) site for this course. It will give you a good start to the course if you take the time to read the syllabus carefully. Take note of all due dates and mark your calendar accordingly. Additionally, please explore the all of the icons on the menu selection of this web-based course site. Open each section and explore content. You may work ahead of schedule if you wish but it is important to your success of the course that you not get behind on weekly assignments. Please use the "Calendar" section of this BB site to assist you in planning your studies, class preparation, and completion of deliverables. The class will meet face-to-face twice during the semester. The first face-to-face class will be January 23, 2009 from 9:00-12:00 Noon in Room 5.180. This first class will include a lecture and an overview of web-based course techniques in the SON LC. The final class will be on April 24, 2009 from 9-12 Noon in Room 5.180. In preparation for our first class on January 23, 2009, please go to the Discussion Board in the UTTC course platform and post an introduction prior to our first face-to-face class. In your self-introduction, please tell your student colleagues and faculty something about yourself. Minimally, give your name; what program you are in, e.g., RN-to-BSN; if employed, in what role; and anything else you would like to share, e.g., hobbies, children, pets, volunteer work, etc. If you like, you can attach a favorite quote or photo. That is all you need to do before the first class. All materials for the first class will be provided as hand-outs. This course requires the development of a special topic paper and presentation. There are 20 special topics from which to choose and these topics are found in the syllabus that is on the UTTC course platform. No two students may have the same topic. A discussion group thread has been established for you to enter your selection. Please do so by listing the special topic title and topic number (found in syllabus). Selections are allowed on a “first-come” basis. You should review discussion group entries made in advance of your entry request to ensure that you are selecting a topic not yet chosen. Tuesday January 20, 2009 the new semester will begin. Please read the course schedule carefully since some students have Monday and other students have Tuesday maternity clinical, the schedule is a little bit complicated. The orientation to the course for Monday group will begin at 9am on Monday 1/26/09 in room 1.110 that will occur after the regular classes on Wednesday 1/21/09 due to Martin Luther King holiday. Even you registered clinical for evening shifts, you still need to attend the classes held during the day time. The medication calculation test will be taken online and passed before the first clinical day. Please read the details regarding the medication test when professor Scott Hudson send the e mail to you. The Monday clinical groups will have tour to the hospital from 3pm to 5pm on Monday 1/26/09. The Tuesday clinical groups will tour to the hospital from 12 noon to 2pm on Tuesday 1/27/09. Please wear lab coat over your nice street clothes and wear the name tag during the tour day.
