Undergraduate Programs

All students interested in applying for undergraduate study at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Office of Admissions and the School of Nursing.

Admission Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program

Admission to the BSN program consists of two separate application processes.

First, students must apply for admission to the University of Texas at Austin as a Pre-Nursing major. Students must be formally admitted to the University with the Pre-Nursing major code in order to complete the BSN prerequisite courses and apply to the upper-division Professional Sequence.

Second, students must apply for admission to the School of Nursing Upper-Division Professional Sequence. The School of Nursing admits students into the upper-division during the spring and fall semesters. Students who are admitted must complete all prerequisites before beginning the professional sequence. Students who hold a current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas may complete their BSN at UT. Please refer to the ADN-BSN Admission Requirements for further information.

Admission Requirements to UT Austin as a Pre-Nursing major

Students must first be admitted to the University of Texas at Austin as a pre-nursing major in order to complete the BSN prerequisite courses.  Application for admission to the University is done through the UT Austin Office of Admissions.

  • Prospective students, including entering freshmen, transfer students, and international students, can apply for admission to the University of Texas at Austin online by visiting the Office of Admissions Prospective Students page.

Prospective internal transfer and transfer students must attend a Prospective Student Information Session at the School of Nursing.

  • Current UT Austin students with a non-nursing major code can apply to change their major by following the Internal Transfer Guidelines for the School of Nursing.

Internal Transfer Information

An internal transfer student is one who is currently enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin in a non-nursing major and wants to transfer into the School of Nursing Pre-Professional Sequence (ie, pre-nursing).

Normally, students may submit a Change of Major Request and all required documents as early as the end of the long semester (ie, when grade reports are available) but before the 8th class day for the semester wanting to change to pre-nursing.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must meet the School of Nursing’s Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements. Only students who meet these requirements will be considered for a change of major. Students must complete the Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements Worksheet (PDF - To view PDF file, download Adobe Reader) to determine if she or he meets the requirements for transfer.

The Eligibility Requirements are:

  • Must be currently enrolled in courses at UT Austin,
  • Must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours at UT Austin*,
  • Must have an UT cumulative GPA AND science prerequisite GPA of at least 2.50*,
  • Must have completed a minimum of two science prerequisite courses in residence at UT Austin, and earned a grade of C- or better in each (see list of Accepted Science Prerequisite Courses below),
  • Must have attended a School of Nursing Prospective Student Information Session.

Accepted Science Prerequisite Courses:
The list below meets 2010-2012 Catalog Requirements.

  • BIO 311C Introductory Biology I
  • BIO 326M Introduction to Medical Microbiology
  • BIO 446L Human Microscopy & Gross Anatomy
  • BIO 365S Vertebrate Physiology II
  • CH 301 Principles of Chemistry I
  • SSC 302 Data Analysis for Health Sciences
  • NTR 306 Fundamentals of Nutrition
  • PHR 338 Introduction to Pharmacology

*Courses taken by extension, correspondence, pass/fail, or credit-by-exam do not satisfy these eligibility requirements.

Guidelines

Students must complete the Internal Transfer process in order to change their major to pre-nursing. The steps are described below:

1st Step: Students must satisfy the Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements Worksheet (PDF - To view PDF file, download Adobe Reader). Students must complete the Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements Worksheet to determine if she or he meets the requirements for transfer.

2nd Step: Students must submit the completed Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements Worksheet (PDF - To view PDF file, download Adobe Reader) to the Student Affairs Office, NUR 2.400, before the 8th class day of the current semester.

3rd Step: At the time the student submits the request form and worksheet, the student will fill out a Transfer from One Undergraduate College/School to Another Within the University.

4th Step: The School of Nursing will review requests and render decisions by the initial add/drop period if forms are submitted prior to that date. Forms submitted after the initial add/drop period will be processed in a timely manner but may take several days for the change to occur.

5th Step: Advising will be available for those students approved for a change in major.

Students may monitor the status of the Change of Major Request via the Check Your RIS website. Do not call or email the School of Nursing regarding the status of your request.

Admission Requirements to the Upper-Division Professional Sequence

Admission to the Professional Sequence requires the following:

  • Admission to UT Austin for the semester of intended enrollment
  • Completion of final prerequisite courses at the time of enrollment (not the time of application)*
  • Minimum cumulative UT GPA of 2.5 in each of the following areas: sciences, prerequisite courses, and all UT coursework (students with GPA > 3.0 will be more competitive)
  • Work/Volunteer experience in health care
  • Personal Essay

*Please note: 11 credit hours of the prerequisite courses must be taken in residence at UT Austin. These courses will NOT transfer in from another institution.  See BSN Overview for a listing of these courses.

ADN-BSN Admission Requirements

Admission to the ADN-BSN program is for Registered Nurses and consists of two separate application processes. Prospective students must apply to the UT Austin Office of Admissions and to the School of Nursing. Please note, the deadline for summer/fall admission is March 1st (Please see ADN-BSN application procedures page for more information).  

Admission to the University of Texas at Austin

To apply to the University, students must complete the Office of Admissions’ online application and submit all required documents for undergraduate transfer students.  For more detailed information on this process, please visit the Office of Admissions.

Admission to the School of Nursing ADN-BSN Program requires the following:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma
  • Current Registered Nurse License in the state of Texas
  • Completion of all prerequisite coursework
  • Academic credit for previous Nursing coursework awarded by transfer credit and/or credit-by-exam (NLN ACE II Mobility Exams)
  • Admission to the University of Texas at Austin as a “Nursing Professional with RN” major
  • Admission for Fall semester only

Students must complete a separate application to the School of Nursing and submit all required application materials before the March 1st deadline. Although there are no required ADN to BSN information sessions,  applicants are advised to meet with the ADN to BSN advisor to insure all application requirements are met. Graduate Programs

All students interested in applying for graduate study in Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Office of Graduate Studies and the School of Nursing. Applicants are expected to be graduates of accredited colleges or universities.

Admission to the Alternate Entry MSN program requires the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an area other than Nursing
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the past five years
  • Completion of all prerequisite courses at the time of enrollment (not the time of application)
  • Selection of “Nursing-Alternate Entry” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Submittal of the 3 AE-MSN reference forms (at least one reference must be from a healthcare professional, such as a nurse, physician, nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist)
  • Admission for Summer term only

*Applicants applying to the AE-MSN program are encouraged to have volunteer or work experience in a healthcare related field.

Admission to the Master of Science in Nursing program requires the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree OR Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma AND a non-nursing bachelor’s degree (BS/BA)
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Completion of a Statistics course with a grade of C or higher
  • Selection of “Nursing” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only

Admission to the PhD program in Nursing requires the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and/or Master of Science in Nursing degree OR Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma AND a non-nursing bachelor’s or master’s degree
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Completion of a Statistics course with a grade of C or higher
  • Selection of “Nursing” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only

Admission to the Post-Master’s Certificate program for the Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner requires the following:

  • Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited institution
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Applicants to the Family Nurse Practitioner program must have two years full-time work experience as an RN completed at the time of application for admission
  • Applicants to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program must have one year full-time work experience as an RN with children/adolescents completed at the time of application.
  • Selection of “Non-Degree Seeking” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only
