Undergraduate Programs

All students interested in applying for undergraduate study at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Office of Admissions and the School of Nursing.

Admission Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program

Admission to the BSN program consists of two separate application processes. 

First, students must apply for admission to the University of Texas at Austin as a Pre-Nursing major. Students must be formally admitted to the University with the Pre-Nursing major code in order to complete the BSN prerequisite courses and apply to the upper-division Professional Sequence.

Second, students must apply for admission to the School of Nursing Upper-Division Professional Sequence. The School of Nursing admits students into the upper-division during the spring and fall semesters. Students who are admitted must complete all prerequisites before beginning the professional sequence.

Admission Requirements to UT Austin as a Pre-Nursing major

Students must first be admitted to the University of Texas at Austin as a pre-nursing major in order to complete the BSN prerequisite courses.  Application for admission to the University is done through the UT Austin Office of Admissions.

  • Prospective students, including entering freshmen, transfer students, and international students, can apply for admission to the University of Texas at Austin online by visiting the Office of Admissions Prospective Students page.

Prospective internal transfer and transfer students must attend a Prospective Student Information Session at the School of Nursing.

  • Current UT Austin students with a non-nursing major code can apply to change their major by following the Internal Transfer Guidelines for the School of Nursing.

Prospective Student Information Sessions

Prospective Student Information Sessions at the School of Nursing are designed to enhance students’ understanding of nursing as a major at the University of Texas at Austin.  The sessions provide information for internal transfer and transfer students and on applying to the University and the Pre-Nursing major, evaluating transfer coursework, completing the BSN prerequisite courses, and applying to the Upper-Division Professional Sequence.  Each Information Session is led by an academic advisor, who then serves as a point-of-contact to answer any additional questions or concerns the students may have.

Internal Transfer Guidelines

Students who are currently enrolled at UT Austin with a non-nursing major must complete the Internal Transfer application process in order to change their major to pre-nursing.  This process is described below.

1st Step:

  • Students must satisfy the internal transfer Eligibility Requirements

2nd Step:

3rd Step:

  • Students must bring the completed Change of Major Request form to the Student Affairs Office (NUR 2.104A) before the 8th class day of the current semester
  • Once received, the Student Affairs Office will provide students with the official University of Texas at Austin Change of Major form to complete

4th Step:

  • Both major change forms are given to an academic advisor, who processes the paperwork
  • If approved, major changes will take effect prior to the 12th class day of the current semester

Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements

In order to apply to change majors to Pre-Nursing, students must first meet the School of Nursing’s Internal Transfer Eligibility Requirements.  Only students who meet these requirements will be considered for a change of major.

The Eligibility Requirements are:

  • Be currently enrolled in courses at UT Austin
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at UT Austin*
  • Have an overall UT GPA of at least 2.50*
  • Have taken a minimum of 2 science prerequisite courses in residence at UT Austin with a grade of “C” or better* (courses listed below)
  • Have attended a School of Nursing Prospective Student Information Session.

*Please note that any classes taken by extension, correspondence, pass/fail, or credit-by-exam will not satisfy these eligibility requirements.

Admission Requirements to the Upper-Division Professional Sequence

Admission to the Professional Sequence requires the following:

  • Admission to UT Austin for the semester of intended enrollment
  • Completion of final prerequisite courses at the time of enrollment (not the time of application)*
  • Minimum cumulative UT GPA of 2.5 in each of the following areas: sciences, prerequisite courses, and all UT coursework (students with GPA > 3.0 will be more competitive)
  • Work/Volunteer experience in health care
  • Personal Essay

*Please note: 11 credit hours of the prerequisite courses must be taken in residence at UT Austin. These courses will NOT transfer in from another institution.  See BSN Overview for a listing of these courses.

ADN-BSN Admission Requirements

Admission to the ADN-BSN program consists of two separate application processes. Prospective students must apply to the UT Austin Office of Admissions and to the School of Nursing. Please note, there is only one admission deadline each year: March 1st (Please see ADN-BSN application procedures page for more information).  

Admission to the University of Texas at Austin

To apply to the University, students must complete the Office of Admissions’ online application and submit all required documents for undergraduate transfer students.  For more detailed information on this process, please visit the Office of Admissions.

Admission to the School of Nursing ADN-BSN Program requires the following:

  • Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma
  • Current Registered Nurse License in the state of Texas
  • Completion of all prerequisite coursework
  • Academic credit for previous Nursing coursework awarded by transfer credit and/or credit-by-exam (NLN ACE II Mobility Exams)
  • Admission to the University of Texas at Austin as a “Nursing Professional with RN” major
  • Admission for Fall semester only

Students must complete a separate application to the School of Nursing and submit all required application materials before the February 15th deadline.  For more detailed information about application procedures please visit ADN-BSN Application Procedures.

Graduate Programs

All students interested in applying for graduate study in Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Office of Graduate Studies and the School of Nursing. Applicants are expected to be graduates of accredited colleges or universities.

  • Selection of “Nursing-Alternate Entry” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Summer term only

Admission to the Master of Science in Nursing program requires the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree OR Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma AND a non-nursing bachelor’s degree*
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Completion of an upper-division Statistics course with a grade of C or higher
  • Selection of “Nursing” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only
  • Applicants to the Family Nurse Practitioner program must meet all of the above listed criteria and have two years full-time work experience as an RN completed at the time of application for admission
  • Applicants to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program must meet all of the above listed criteria and have one year full-time work experience as an RN with children/adolescents completed at the time of application

*Applicants holding a non-nursing bachelor’s degree and an ADN and RN License apply to the MSN Bridge program. Students admitted to this program must complete, in conjunction with their master’s level coursework, three upper-division BSN “bridge courses.” The three bridge courses are taken simultaneously with the master’s courses, but are not part of the MSN degree plan.

Admission to the Master of Science in Nursing/Master of Business Administration Joint Degree program requires the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the past five years
  • Completion of Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) within the past five years
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Completion of an upper-division Statistics course with a grade of C or higher
  • Selection of “Nursing-Business Administration” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only
  • Admission to both the School of Nursing MSN program AND the McCombs School of Business MBA program (see McCombs MBA for admission information to the College of Business)*       

*Applicants accepted to a graduate program in the School of Nursing but not accepted by the McCombs School of Business may notify the Graduate and International Admissions Center and the School of Nursing of their intent to enroll only in the MSN program.

Admission to the PhD program in Nursing requires the following:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and/or Master of Science in Nursing degree OR Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma AND a non-nursing bachelor’s or master’s degree
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Completion of an upper-division Statistics course with a grade of C or higher
  • Selection of “Nursing” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only

Admission to the Post-Master’s Certificate program for the Family or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner requires the following:

  • Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited institution
  • Upper-division cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Applicants to the Family Nurse Practitioner program must have two years full-time work experience as an RN completed at the time of application for admission
  • Applicants to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program must have one year full-time work experience as an RN with children/adolescents completed at the time of application.
  • Selection of “Non-Degree Seeking” as major choice on the online application for admission
  • Admission for Fall semester only
