Overview

The School of Nursing values its employees. As a way of recognizing members of staff for all of their important contributions, SON believes in rewarding staff employees who demonstrate a commitment to the goals and values of the University and the School.

SONstar is awarded every four months to any classified staff member, regardless of service length. Members of the SONstar Committee and faculty are not eligible for the award. No staff member will be designated as a SONstar more than once in a two-year period.

Anyone in SON may nominate, including the SONstar Committee, faculty, staff or students.

The nomination form lists the selection criteria, and the nominator should cite examples for applicable criteria. You may nominate someone by printing our paper nomination form (PDF format) and presenting it to a SONstar committee member or completing the form and submitting it online.

From the list of nominees, the SONstar Committee will decide the winner.

The SONstar Committee consists of five members: Charla Carrington, Margaret Hill, Stephanie Key, Shane Scott, and Linda Murphy.

A SONstar will be designated on January 1st, May 1st and September 1st.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for SON star are as follows:

Significantly improves internal or external customer service or increases faculty/staff/student satisfaction.
Significantly improves a work process or increases the efficiency of a procedure or is innovative in terms of solutions, planning or organizational effort.
Takes initiative to reduce organizational barriers through such activities as mentoring, voluntarily assisting coworkers and participating in cross-functional teams.
Works to foster collaboration, communication and cooperation among colleagues and University and/or school constituents.
Performs at a level above and beyond normal job requirements.

Shane Scott
Radio/TV/Film Specialist

Shane joined the School of Nursing in the fall of 2008, shortly after moving back to Austin from San Francisco. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from UT Austin. His passion for digital art and interest in audio/visual systems led him to pursue a certification in Multimedia Studies from San Francisco State University. As a R/T/F Specialist in the SON, he enjoys broadening the role of technology and media in the classroom, helping to solve technical problems, and generally being on hand for faculty and students. He also appreciates getting to work with many forms of media, including podcasts and videos, and relishes designing posters, diagrams, and logos for various projects and programs.
