Prominent Houston attorney, philanthropist and University of Texas alumnus, Joseph D. Jamail was honored on Thursday, October 9, at The University of Texas at Austin Alumni Center for his extraordinary support of the School of Nursing. Sharing the evening with Mr. Jamail was Dean Dolores Sands, President Bill Powers, Provost Steven Leslie, the School of Nursing Faculty Advisory Council, various faculty and staff, as well as 40 of this year’s students who are Jamail Scholarship recipients. Mr. Jamail’s recent gift of $2.5 million dollars will establish an endowment at the School of Nursing to support the recruitment and retention of renowned faculty and create fellowships for doctorial students.

Two Jamail scholarship recipients, Cherie Simpson and Eric Kurkowski, spoke at the event and described how the scholarships touched their own lives. Mr. Jamail has been a friend of the School of Nursing for more than 15 years and has created four endowments supporting its efforts. Over 500 scholarships have been given as a result of Mr. Jamail’s generosity. Regarding Mr. Jamail’s enduring legacy, President Powers said, “Throughout your life you have made this world a better place. You stand up for people who can’t stand up for themselves and it is inadequate to just say thank you. Scholarships do not come from the university they come from people like Joe Jamail.” The School of Nursing extends its appreciation to Mr. Jamail for his generous lead gift to the school’s capital campaign. His vision will help the school address critical issues in the faculty and nursing shortage.
