Family Wellness Center Gets $108,509 Grant from Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
Posted: May 7, 2012
The funds will be used to support the center’s Women’s Wellness Program, which provides free breast cancer screening services and follow-up for low-income women in Austin and Travis County. Past gifts from the organization to the Women's Wellness Program total more than $1 million.
“Many women in the Austin area are unable to access breast cancer screenings and follow-up care,” said Dr. Lisa Doggett, FWC center director. “Because of this generous grant, we will be able to continue to provide such services, many of them for free, and save lives.”
The Family Wellness Center, which provides medical care to low-income and uninsured residents, and its Women’s Wellness Program are service projects of the School of Nursing. Through a recent partnership with CommUnityCare, the Family Wellness Center became a Federally Qualified Health Center. In addition, the center is a training site for nurse practitioner students, helping them to master skills in management of chronic disease, acute conditions and preventative medicine.
About the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
We live here. We race here. We save lives here.
One out of eight women here in the Austin area will have to fight breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s why, since 1999, the Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure has been hard at work here in the Austin area raising money to provide breast cancer screening, education and medical services as well as financial and emotional support. In fact, up to 75 percent of the money we raise each year is put to work right here in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties to improve the lives of everyone affected by this deadly disease. The remaining funds go to national research to find a cure for breast cancer once and for all. For more information about the organization, please visit Austin Affiliate of Susan G.
