Funding Resources

The University of Texas at Austin offers graduate students many options for financial assistance. Some departments provide support to students in the form of assistantships (teaching or research) or fellowships that may cover all or some of your financial needs. The Graduate School awards university-wide fellowships based upon nominations from departments. Applications for these fellowships are not accepted directly from students.

For students who need additional financial support beyond fellowships or assistantships, financial aid is available. Budget your tuition and expenses as a graduate student at UT Austin.

Graduate students generally support themselves in one of the following ways:

Fellowships and Awards

The Graduate School provides Recruiting Fellowships, Continuing Fellowships, Diversity Fellowships, and Professional Development Travel Awards, as well as coordinating many extramural fellowships. It also serves as a resource center for students seeking information on fellowships funded by outside sources.

Student Employment

Teaching and research assistantships provide important experience for graduate students. Assistantships benefit students through interaction with faculty members, and financial support provided by these employment opportunities. Employment in a non-academic role at the university, or out in the community, is an option for many graduate students.  Students are encouraged to check their department web page. Many departments list links to employment opportunities for their graduates.

Financial Aid

Graduate students at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) may apply for federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs administered by the Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
