In Memory of Dr. William S. Livingston

August 15, 2013

Today we remember a truly beloved colleague and former Dean of the Graduate School (1979-1995), Dr. William S. Livingston, who passed away at the age of 93. Dr. Livingston was a gifted and renowned teacher, author, and administrator. His passing closes one of the most extraordinary chapters in the university’s history.

Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, ad interim, Judith Langlois stated, "Bill Livingston was a friend, colleague, and mentor. He was the graduate dean of graduate deans and I learned much from him. I will always be grateful for his wisdom, generosity, and humor. We all, especially graduate students, will miss him very much."

Livingston’s contributions to graduate education at The University of Texas at Austin can still be seen through the work of the many students who have received the Outstanding Academic Student Employee Award named in his honor. Like these students, Dr. Livingston made a difference in graduate education by sharing his passion for learning with others.

"Bill Livingston was instrumental in building a strong Graduate School that went beyond an administrative role and delved deeply into academics,” said former Dean of Graduate Studies, Victoria Rodriguez. “The luster of our current Graduate School, with many of our programs highly ranked nationally and internationally, owes a debt to Dr. Livingston for setting the stage for the academic excellence of our graduate programs."

Dr. Livingston was instrumental in creating both the Graduate Assembly for faculty governance and the Graduate Student Assembly, which to this day still gives graduate students a voice on matters pertaining to their education.

More information about Dr. Livingston's life and legacy can be found on the UT News Web site.

A memorial service in celebration of Bill Livingston will be held Wednesday, September 4 at 10 a.m. in the LBJ Auditorium at the LBJ School of Public Affairs.
