What the Graduate School is Doing for You

Some graduate students just want a bit of extra help with their dissertation, and the Graduate School at UT is here to help.

Dissertations are massive compilations that require very specific citing and formatting guidelines, and for some students, a bit more explanation is needed when it comes to navigating these rules.

Though all of the guidelines can be found online (pdf), it often helps to have a person explaining what is actually expected, and that is where The Graduate School’s Dissertation Workshops come into play. These workshops are essentially group settings in which degree evaluators talk with students about their dissertations. The evaluators go over specific dissertation guidelines and review the checklist—which enumerates what students must have for their final paperwork submission— that must be completed before graduation.

Held once every long semester, these workshops are designed for students who prefer to be walked through the process, as opposed to those who favor a more independent approach.

"The workshop is specially geared toward students...who prefer to have someone go through all of the steps with them,” says Michelle Broadway, Director of Student Academic Services.

This semester’s workshop was held in October, and it is anticipated that the spring workshop will likely be held in March.

“We try to have the workshop far enough in advance so that students can still have enough time to see evaluators on a walk-in basis if they would like,” says Broadway.
