What the Graduate School is Doing for You
The Graduate School at The University of Texas at Austin puts the focus on its students.
Graduate students who are interested in student academic employment will be happy to know that the Graduate School provides many resources to its TAs and AIs, including tuition assistance and staff to help students understand and navigate the system.
“One of the main things we do is help students navigate the bureaucracy,” says Shannon Harris, who works in the Graduate School with Associate Dean Terry Kahn on student employment Issues. It is helpful for student academic employees to know where to turn to find out information on their rights and responsibilities, benefits and various conditions of employment. The Graduate School in MAI 101 is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to assist graduate students in this area.
When it comes to academic employment, graduate students often don’t know where to get started. If you are a degree-seeking graduate student and are interested in becoming a TA or AI, you should first talk to the graduate coordinator within your department, says Michelle Broadway, Director of Student Services for the Graduate School. Many faculty and classes are in need of assistance, and your coordinator will know about available positions.
Broadway and Harris say it’s their job to make sure everything is running smoothly for TAs and AIs around campus, and that they love the opportunity to work with graduate students from a variety of disciplines.
“One thing I’m very impressed about is how we really watch out for students,” says Harris. “We really take their interests to heart and help them stay in compliance.”
