Dr. Leininger's dissertation, Essential Surfaces in Hyperbolic Three-Manifolds, is in the area of three-dimensional topology, an active branch of mathematics concerned with understanding the structure of three-dimensional spaces, or manifolds. His work centers on the theme of incompressible surfaces in three-manifolds and has been published in Topology, one of the leading journals in the field. Dr. Leininger has been awarded a National Science Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship, which he holds in conjunction with a position at Columbia University. Dissertation supervisor: Alan Reid.
