Outstanding Dissertation Award
DANIEL A. STECK - Physics. Dr. Steck's dissertation, Quantum Chaos, Transport, and Decoherence in Atom Optics, presents results of the first observation of "chaos-assisted tunneling"; a phenomenon involving extremely cold atoms predicted over twenty years ago, but not observed experimentally until now. His original theoretical work and experiment techniques have received wide attention in journals such as Science, Physics Today, and Nature, in addition to the popular press. Dr. Steck was awarded a Director's Postdoctoral Fellowship at Los Alamos National Laboratory where is involved in QUEST (Quantum Enabled Science and Technology). His supervisor is Dr. Mark G. Raizen.
