Outstanding Dissertation Award
JOSEPH M. PHILLIPS - History. Dr. Phillips' dissertation, The Fire This Time: The Battle over Racial, Regional, and Religious Identities in Dallas, Texas, 1860-1990, explores the development of whiteness ideology by focusing on the relationship between African Americans, Mexican Americans, Jews, and working class Anglos and analyzing more than a century of historical and social change in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Phillips currently has a teaching appointment in the Department of History at the University and is revising his dissertation for publication. His supervisor is Dr. Neil Foley.
