JOEL SHERZER, Liberal Arts Foundation Centennial Professor in the Department of Anthropology, received his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.  He joined the UT faculty in 1969, and has supervised 37 doctoral dissertations and served on an additional 92 doctoral committees.  Dr. Sherzer's students reflect his interdisciplinary appeal as a linguistic anthropologist; they come not only from Anthropology, but also from Linguistics, Speech Communication, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Curriculum and Instruction, Musicology/Ethnomusicology, French, Spanish/Portuguese, Germanic Studies, American Studies, English, and Sociology.

As testimony to his influence as an instructor and mentor, Dr. Sherzer's students frequently obtain prestigious research grants, publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, present papers at national conferences, and achieve recognition as leaders in their fields.

Dr. Sherzer received his award for Outstanding Graduate Teaching in 2002.
