JACK B. SWIFT, Professor in the Department of Physics, received his bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois.  He joined The University of Texas at Austin faculty in 1971 and specializes in theoretical studies of phase transitions in liquid crystals, nonlinear dynamics, and pattern formation.  Dr. Swift's students have excelled in academic and industrial careers nationwide.

Dr. Swift's courses in Solid State Physics, Fluid Dynamics, and Nonlinear Dynamics are typically filled to capacity and attract students from both inside and outside the department.  Students describe his teaching as creative and insightful, with an emphasis on the critical interplay between experimental investigations and theoretical analyses.  Dr. Swift is greatly appreciated by students he has mentored for guiding them as they learn to frame questions and define significant problems in science.
