Graduate Coordinator Network Meeting Minutes
September 27, 2011 - SAC 2.302

Called to order by Chair Marilyn Lehman.

Newbies:
Graduate School:  Julie Meyer replaces Michelle Broadway (formerly of Registrar’s office)
Casen Brown replaces Shannon Harris.

Alan Constant, Lynne Levinson, Eric Busch (Sanger Learning & Career Center)
Originally in Counseling Center; Career Center offers service in exploration, counseling, and assessment.
Assist over 12,000 students a year.
Goal is to improve service to graduate students.

Career Services – most colleges have a career service offices, focus on helping students get jobs.
Sanger is centralized office – helps students try to figure out what it is they want to do (no job service assistance).  Students have opportunity for career counseling with people who have MA in counseling.
Do career assessment as well.
Want to work with graduate students more; help students who feel that they no longer want to do academia – career changes.

Supplemental Instruction (SI) –structured teaching offered for graduate students.
Offers teaching techniques; opportunity to think about their teaching (philosophy); meet with each other (talk about what works, what doesn’t); work on ways to adapt SI to different disciplines.

Writing – can work with students struggling with good use of time; blockages.

Dean Victoria Rodríguez  (Graduate School)
Welcome to new academic year!
Stemming from inquiries from Provost, Regents --- last few months have been doing comprehensive assessment of graduate student progress;
Looking at last 20-years (since 1989), looking at all graduate students in all programs; indicators to assess quality of programs (gre, gpa, time to degree, financial support, etc.)

Karen Weisbrodt (Assistant Director for Student Data Initiatives, IMA)
Leading initiative for graduate student assessment – graduate student placement.
Need to build database about students and programs – needs department assistance to obtain information.
First, placement data for doctorates (will eventually do for MA graduates as well, ultimate exit information for ND, MA, and PhD is the goal).
Departments will be receiving spreadsheets w/ students going back to 1989.  They have some data for students, will be inputted into the sheets.  Will show up to fie placements.
Initial placement is the key; gives information for how institution placed student
