University Health Services

The mission of University Health Services (UHS) is to provide services that promote and maintain the health of students. These include ambulatory medical services, health education, and public health services.

clockThe UHS staff consists of 14 physicians, 11 advanced nurse practitioners, or physician assistants, and more than 30 nurses as well as pharmacists, physical therapists, medical technologists, radiological technologists and health educators - all dedicated to providing medical and educational services to university students. We also offer specialty clinics for women's health, sports medicine, allergy/immunization services, and urgent care concerns.

As a registered student, you pay a Medical Fee each semester that entitles you to make an appointment to use the health care provider of your choice during regular hours as many times as needed with no office visit charge.   There are charges for many services and procedures used to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries, but these charges are generally much lower than those provided elsewhere. Because our providers see approximately 400 patients a day during the long semesters, our medical services are by appointment only unless your medical condition requires immediate attention. If immediate attention is required, you will either be referred to the UHS Urgent Care area or to a local hospital emergency room, depending on the severity of your symptoms.

UHS offers a 24 hour Nurse Advice Line that is staffed every day of the year. Just call 475-NURS (475-6877). You may call this number at any time to have a nurse assess an illness or injury and receive advice about whether self-care, coming in to UHS, or going to a local hospital emergency facility, is most appropriate for your symptoms.

UHS has a full service Pharmacy that processes claims for most major insurance drug plans. You can also transfer any prescriptions you may currently have to the UHS pharmacy. Be sure to take your insurance card with you if you wish to fill a prescription in the UHS pharmacy or call 471-1824. The pharmacy also provides a variety of over-the-counter medications, personal care items, and snacks.

fountainPlease make sure that you have completed and returned to UHS your Pre-matriculation Health Record documentation and that you have had the immunizations and/or medical tests required by the university. Your ability to register may be affected if these records have not been submitted. Go to the UHS web page for information on required and recommended immunizations.

Because anyone can experience a sudden illness or injury which may require extensive healthcare, we encourage all UT students to have health insurance. Students who are employed by UT in a benefits earning position are covered by UT Employee Health Insurance. Ask the person who does your appointment (if applicable) if you are eligible to receive UT Employee Health Insurance. We strongly encourage student employees to explore their insurance options as soon as they receive their appointments. Students who are benefits-eligible UT employees AND who choose UT Select as their insurance plan may use their insurance benefits for medical services provided at UHS. Our facility is not part of the official UT Select network. However, student employees who incur charges at UHS that are related to an illness or injury can have their claims filed by UHS with UT Select. Charges for medical services at UHS receive the same coverage as comparable services at UT Select network facilities. For more details, please call the UHS Cashier/Insurance Office at 475-8232. Students not covered by other policies may purchase UT System-selected Student Health Insurance for themselves and/or their spouses and children. Please review the information on our policy coverage.

UHS does not file insurance claims for any other type of insurance.  However, students can request documentation needed for filing their own claims if their insurance companies allow them to do so.

Up-to-date information on services, hours, special events and clinics can be found at the UHS web site. This site has an online health and medication information Keyword Search for hundreds of adult health conditions and thousands of documents with information about prescription and over-the-counter medications.
