The University of Texas at Austin promotes academic success for all groups. The university administration recognizes and supports the need to expand educational opportunities to fulfill the promise of a diverse society by enhancing the educational experience for all students. Since 1978, university-wide African American student enrollment has increased from 1,000 to 1,900, while the Hispanic student enrollment has risen from 3,000 to 6,200. African American and Hispanics now make up 16.9 percent of the student population. Today, the university has the largest Hispanic enrollment of any flagship teaching and research university in the nation. The Graduate School has the distinction of awarding the largest number of Hispanic students with Ph.D.'s in the United States, and is sixteenth in the U.S. in producing African American students with Ph.D.'s.
