Having that degree gave me the confidence to go on to other languages, to other accomplishmentsLiving in Paris was a dream. Returning to UT to graduate school in French was a challenge. Without the support of Roger Shattuck, that challenge would never have been met. He and the other faculty members like Donald Selstrom in that very small department made it their challenge to see me through. Having that degree gave me the confidence to go on to other languages, to other accomplishments. Through all the ensuing years I have remained indebted to each of them, most of whom have “gone on” and try to “pay it forward” in my activities, in my pursuits, and in my life. My endless gratitude to all those unsung champions of this student who arrived in their classrooms with little background and only the memories of a young girl’s year in France to push her onwards.
