DESCRIPTION:The use of human embryonic stem cells in research has been controversial since the ability to culture human stem cells was first announced in 1998. This issue has divided the international community and remains hotly contested, particularly at this moment, given the recent federal policy changes regarding how this research is conducted.

This conference will examine how law, science and ethics have affected stem cell science and the pace at which its promise will be realized. The outcome of the conference will be an up-to-date and comprehensive assessment of how law and ethics affect scientific innovation.

"Marketing Evolved: Digital Reach & Human Touch in a New Marketing Era"

Summary:

We're living in a world where people's evolving attitudes, expectations and behaviors - enabled by technology - have completely shifted the traditional balance of control from marketers to a broader base of consumers and influencers. And it is no understatement to suggest that this dramatic shift is reordering the media and marketing landscape. Wolfman will explore the idea of convergence - including a conceptual framework that can be used to better understand emerging trends - and the critical role that digital has played in marketing's transformation, and why trust between brands and people should be a growing focus of every marketer.

DESCRIPTION:The world is changing dramatically, imposing new requirements for success. To thrive in the future, companies will have to embrace the social transformation of capitalism.

In his book "Firms of Endearment: How World-Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose," Raj Sisodia discusses the concept of social transformation of capitalism using his research on hundreds of companies that people love. He arrived at 28 companies that pay their employees well, provide great value to customers and have profitable suppliers. These firms also returned 1,025% to stockholder investors over the past 10 years, compared to only 122% for the S&P 500.

Raj Sisodia is a professor of marketing and founding director of the Center for Marketing Technology at Bentley College. He has a Ph.D. in marketing and business policy from Columbia University. He has published nearly 100 articles in professional journals and writes frequently for the "Wall Street Journal." His research, teaching and consulting expertise span the areas of strategic marketing, marketing productivity, marketing ethics and stakeholder-based marketing.

DESCRIPTION:Professor of Finance Lewis Spellman presents "Economic Policy Has Reached a Dead End and the Recession Continues."

Many gauges of the Great Recession continue to reach high-water marks while traditional monetary, fiscal and exchange-rate policy used to contain the economic downturn have hit a dead end and can be of little or no further benefit. Indeed, to continue to push theses policies further adds to the related mega-risks known as sovereign risk, inflation risk, capital outflow risk and default risk. To date there is one positive occurrence from policy and that is a fixed income and stock market rally, but these are not supported by developments in the underlying economy. We will attempt to sort through the many forces at work as well as discussing possible outcomes of the economic crisis.

SUMMARY:Domestic Partner Benefits Rally will appeal to UT president
LOCATION:Texas Union Patio
DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20091119T120000
DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20091119T130000

DESCRIPTION:As students, we pay thousands of dollars in tuition and thus we demand an end to a bad management policy that keeps quality faculty and staff away, and as a result reduces the value of our degrees.

Not offering domestic partner benefits is simply a bad management policy!

President Powers wants UT to become the top public institution in the country in the years to come. We first have to be able to compete with other institutions that do offer domestic partner benefits to their faculty and staff.

Join us at a rally demanding that President Powers push the Board of Regents to allow him to offer these benefits.

DESCRIPTION:The Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law invites you to "Bad Debts: Assessing China's Financial Influence in Great Power Politics," with Daniel Drezner, Tufts University.

Commentators and policymakers have articulated growing concerns about U.S. dependence on China and other authoritarian capitalist states as a source of credit to fund our trade and budget deficits. What are the security implications of China's creditor status? Professor Drezner will argue that the power of credit has been exaggerated in policy circles. China can use its financial power to resist American entreaties, but it cannot coerce the United States into changing its policies.

Daniel W. Drezner is professor of international politics at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a senior editor at the <em>National Interest</em>. He has received fellowships from the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the Council on Foreign Relations and Harvard University. He is the author, most recently, of "All Politics Is Global: Explaining International Regulatory Regimes" (2007), which explores how and when regulatory standards are coordinated across borders in an era of globalization. Professor Drezner writes a widely read foreign affairs blog at <a href="http://drezner.foreignpolicy.com">http://drezner.foreignpolicy.com</a>.

DESCRIPTION:This session builds upon the fundamental course in purchasing law. The course reviews requirements or obligations under UCC sales contracts, including performance obligations of the buyer and seller and remedies for breach of contract. Also covered are statutes relating to government regulation of the purchasing function including an overview intellectual property (trade secrets, patents, copyrights), federal statutes affecting purchasing (Sherman Antitrust Act, FTC Act, Robinson-Patman Act, bankruptcy) and a brief review of federal environmental laws that may affect purchasing decisions.

In addition, there are several types of dispute resolution processes that are briefly discussed: litigation, mediation and arbitration. Since manufacturers and sellers may also find themselves embroiled in product liability lawsuits, the basics of this cause of action are discussed with tips for purchasing professionals to minimize the risk of liability.
