BIOGRAPHY

Richard Spence is director of the Addiction Research Institute of the Center for Social Work Research at the university. He and other researchers look at individual, family, societal and cultural levels that influence substance abuse and substance abuse treatment. The institute, says Spence, is dedicated to improving access and quality of services for underserved populations with substance abuse and related disorders. He recently received a $3 million federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to study and promote adoption of evidence-based practices in substance abuse treatment.
