Early example of conceptual film by Bill Lundberg featured at Blanton
All day event, Blanton Museum of Art. The Blanton Museum of Art is exhibiting, for the first time since its acquisition, the film installation "Swimmer" by Bill Lundberg, artist and professor at The University of Texas at Austin. The piece was created in 1975 and is one of the earliest examples of conceptual film work. The Blanton Museum's presentation offers viewers a rare opportunity to experience this important work by a forefather of film and video installation. "Swimmer" creates the illusion of a water-based environment within the museum. The sounds of splashing water fill the darkened gallery and the image of a man treading water is cast onto the floor. The horizontal projection brings the illusion of film into the realm of reality.

UT Leadership and Ethics Institute announces application deadline

LEAP, a component of the University of Texas Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) - a leadership initiative of the Office of the Dean of Students- is a leadership development program geared toward first-year students who are looking to grow and develop their leadership skills. Through an eight-week leadership workshop series, offered both in the fall and spring semesters, first-year students will interact with student mentors, create a network with other first-year students and build a solid foundation of ethical leadership principles and practices. Workshops will be held in the Spring semester from Jan. 26 through Mar. 23, 2010, every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Nominate for the 2010 Kavli Prize

National Security Innovation Competition (NSIC) calls for entries

Kenneth J. Hale's New Works from Carmel, CA, presented on campus

Orange Santa accepts donations during annual toy drive
8 a.m., Campus-wide. Orange Santa began in 1994 as a program designed to foster a more caring campus environment by providing help for members of the university community who have special needs during the holiday season. In December 2008, Orange Santa served almost 500 families, including 1,831 children. All donated toys or gifts should be new, unwrapped and in the original packing. Wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbons and gift cards are needed to wrap and label gifts once shoppers have made their selections. Although grocery store gift certificates are welcome, we ask that no food items be contributed. Donations will be collected at UT guard stations on the main campus and at the Pickle Research Campus. In addition, there are numerous locations where gift items will be collected. Please check the Orange Santa Web site for a listing of Campus Collection Stations for the site nearest you. Applications for those wishing to receive assistance through the program can be downloaded or filled out on the Orange Santa Web site.
Limestone Sculptures on view at Wildflower Center
9 a.m., Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. An elegant exhibit of glass-and-limestone sculptures are being featured in the central gardens of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Damian Priour's largest piece in a collection of four chairs is more than 7-feet-tall. All were created in Priour's local studio, and several include glass inserts that evoke water. The sculptures will be featured in conjunction with a display of Priour's works at Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum.

Work of Kelly Fearing featured in "Selections from a Life in Art"

An internationally respected artist and art educator, he has conducted the bulk of his career in Austin. A professor emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Art and Art History, Fearing co-authored four major textbooks in art education and mentored and inspired hundreds of art teachers during his forty years of teaching at UT.

Russian social policy and family violence is lecture topic

Lecture series in chemical engineering presents award-winning scholar
2 p.m., CPE 2.220. Dr. Stanley Sandler of the University of Delaware is the featured speaker for the Texas Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series in Chemical Engineering. He will present the talk "The Use of Computational Quantum Mechanics for Predictions for Thermodynamics, Environmental Engineering, Reaction Kinetics, and the Pharmaceutical Industry." Dr. Sandler holds the H.B. DuPont chair of chemical engineering and is the director of the Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics. He received the Founders Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Chemical Engineering from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
Planetary Organization for Space Science & Exploration holds meeting

UT's Planetary Organization for Space Science and Exploration (POSSE) is a student-run organization that plans to bring external and internal space science researchers to the forefront of our UT community by allowing them an outlet for their research in the form of lectures. We also plan on being a nexus for information regarding research and educational opportunities for students, and to help further space science research at the University of Texas. We are open to any UT affiliated individual/student with and interest in research in the space sciences. POSSE will also plan fun social events such as joining in on star parties and facilitating field trips to the McDonald Observatory, NASA facilities and other locales. We're proud to announce the first official meeting (informal) of UT Planetary Organization for Space Sciences and Exploration (UT POSSE), featuring a short talk by Dr. Mark Helper on planetary/lunar science. The Films of Kenneth Anger, Vol. 1, to be screened
7 p.m., Creative Research Lab (CRL 0). As part of the No Lone Zone exhibition at the Creative Research Lab, there will be a screening of The Films of Kenneth Anger, Vol. 1 (2006). Short works from the first half of avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger's career make up this remarkable collection. An influence on everyone from Andy Warhol to Martin Scorsese, Anger blends striking imagery and universal symbols to create innovative experimental pieces. Included are "Fireworks" (1947), "Puce Moment" (1949), the 16-minute version of "Rabbit's Moon" (1950), 'Eaux d'Artifice" (1953) and "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome" (1954).

What began as anger over election fraud exploded into protests of millions of people in the streets of Iran's cities, animated by social and economic grievances and raising the possibility of revolutionary change. Professor Snehal Shingavi will give a talk with focus on the dynamics of the struggle in Iran against Ahmadinejad, and the labor movement since the 1979 revolution.
