Early example of conceptual film by Bill Lundberg featured at Blanton
All day event, Blanton Museum of Art. The Blanton Museum of Art is exhibiting, for the first time since its acquisition, the film installation "Swimmer" by Bill Lundberg, artist and professor at The University of Texas at Austin. The piece was created in 1975 and is one of the earliest examples of conceptual film work. The Blanton Museum's presentation offers viewers a rare opportunity to experience this important work by a forefather of film and video installation. "Swimmer" creates the illusion of a water-based environment within the museum. The sounds of splashing water fill the darkened gallery and the image of a man treading water is cast onto the floor. The horizontal projection brings the illusion of film into the realm of reality.

UT Leadership and Ethics Institute announces application deadline
All day event, Student Organization Center, 4th floor of the Student Services Building. LEAP, a component of the University of Texas Leadership and Ethics Institute (LEI) - a leadership initiative of the Office of the Dean of Students- is a leadership development program geared toward first-year students who are looking to grow and develop their leadership skills. Through an eight-week leadership workshop series, offered both in the fall and spring semesters, first-year students will interact with student mentors, create a network with other first-year students and build a solid foundation of ethical leadership principles and practices. Workshops will be held in the Spring semester from Jan. 26 through Mar. 23, 2010, every Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

The Islamic Dialogue Student Association (IDSA) is launching a new project which seeks to inform UT community about Islam, its bases, contemporary issues and the vitality of interfaith dialogue in Islam. Study in China: Scholarship opportunity announced
All day event, China. The Association of American Universities (AAU) is working with the Chinese Embassy to offer a third year of the AAU/Chinese government scholarship program for students at AAU universities to study at Chinese universities.

Nominate for the 2010 Kavli Prize
All day event, Oslo, Norway. The Kavli Prize is awarded for outstanding achievement in advancing our knowledge and understanding in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. Each Kavli Prize consists of USD 1,000,000, a scroll and a gold medal for each scientific field.

National Security Innovation Competition (NSIC) calls for entries
All day event, Colorado Springs, CO. The fourth annual National Security Innovation Competition (NSIC) for college students will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, on May 7, 2010. NSIC 2010 is designed to stimulate interest among college students in national security-related innovations and expose novel technologies to a broad audience, including industry, academic and government organizations involved in aerospace, defense, security and first responder activities.

Nominations requested for UT Co-op Research Excellence Award

Kenneth J. Hale's New Works from Carmel, CA, presented on campus

Orange Santa accepts donations during annual toy drive
8 a.m., Campus-wide. Orange Santa began in 1994 as a program designed to foster a more caring campus environment by providing help for members of the university community who have special needs during the holiday season. In December 2008, Orange Santa served almost 500 families, including 1,831 children. All donated toys or gifts should be new, unwrapped and in the original packing. Wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbons and gift cards are needed to wrap and label gifts once shoppers have made their selections. Although grocery store gift certificates are welcome, we ask that no food items be contributed. Donations will be collected at UT guard stations on the main campus and at the Pickle Research Campus. In addition, there are numerous locations where gift items will be collected. Please check the Orange Santa Web site for a listing of Campus Collection Stations for the site nearest you. Applications for those wishing to receive assistance through the program can be downloaded or filled out on the Orange Santa Web site.

Limestone Sculptures on view at Wildflower Center
9 a.m., Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. An elegant exhibit of glass-and-limestone sculptures are being featured in the central gardens of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Damian Priour's largest piece in a collection of four chairs is more than 7-feet-tall. All were created in Priour's local studio, and several include glass inserts that evoke water. The sculptures will be featured in conjunction with a display of Priour's works at Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum.

Impromptu Speech Meeting is weekly chance to hone speaking skills

Work of Kelly Fearing featured in "Selections from a Life in Art"
11 a.m., Bass Concert Hall, Performing Arts Center, 5th floor lobby. Kelly Fearing is a living, national art treasure. An internationally respected artist and art educator, he has conducted the bulk of his career in Austin. A professor emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin's Department of Art and Art History, Fearing co-authored four major textbooks in art education and mentored and inspired hundreds of art teachers during his forty years of teaching at UT.

Pablo Vargas Lugo's "Eclipses for Austin" explores collective ritual
11 a.m., Blanton Museum of Art (BMA). Pablo Vargas Lugo's WorkSpace project, "Eclipses for Austin," explores solar eclipses as important collective rituals. Total eclipses of the sun provoke astonishment, anxiety, hope, joy and fear, and compel those who witness them to question their place in the world.
