TASK FORCE RECOMMENDS GENDER EQUITY PLAN

The Gender Equity Task Force, created by Provost Steven Leslie in March 2007, has recommended that the University develop and enact a 5-10 year gender equity plan to "reduce or eliminate faculty gender inequity—specifically with respect to hiring, promotion, salaries and governance." The report found gender gaps at the University in areas of faculty representation, promotion and attrition for faculty advancing through the ranks, salary and leadership.

PROFESSOR WINS $10,000 HAMILTON PRIZE


Professor Wins $10,000 Hamilton Prize

The winners of this year's University Co-op Robert W. Hamilton Book Awards, among the highest honors of literary achievement given to published authors at the University, were announced Oct. 22. Denise Schmandt-Besserat, professor emerita in the departments of Art and Art History and Middle Eastern Studies, won the $10,000 grand prize for her book, "When Writing Met Art: From Symbol to Story." Four additional faculty members were awarded $3,000 runner-up prizes.

SCIENTISTS PROBE ANTARCTIC GLACIERS

Scientists from the Jackson School of Geosciences, the University of Edinburgh and the Australian Antarctic Division have teamed up to explore two of the last uncharted regions of Earth, the Aurora and Wilkes Subglacial Basins, immense ice-buried lowlands in Antarctica with a combined area the size of Mexico. The research could show how Earth's climate changed in the past and how future climate change will affect global sea level.

$1 MILLION AND 25 NEW ARTIFACTS FOR PHYSICAL CULTURE COLLECTION


$1 Million and 25 New Artifacts for Physical Culture Collection

The world's largest physical culture collection, in the University's H.J. Lutcher Stark Center for Physical Culture and Sports, is a little more pumped up after receiving a $1 million gift from physical fitness icons Joe and Betty Weider. The couple also pledged to donate about 25 unique paintings and sculptures from their personal collection.

SURVEY REVEALS HURRICANE IKE'S UNDERWATER DAMAGE


Survey Reveals Hurricane Ike's Underwater Damage

Conducting a rapid response research mission after Hurricane Ike, scientists at the University surveyed the inlet between Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, discovering the hurricane significantly reshaped the seafloor and likely carried an enormous amount of sand and sediment out into the Gulf. The ongoing research could help coastal communities gauge the effectiveness of their sometimes controversial efforts to replenish eroding sand along shorelines while revealing the role storms play in building and eroding barrier islands such as Galveston.

TEXAS EXES CELEBRATE UT'S 125TH ANNIVERSARY WITH BOOK

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the University the Texas Exes have published a full-color coffee-table book titled "Our Texas." Rarely seen historic photos and captions bring 125 years to life and capture the beauty, character and spirit of the University campus and its people. ALCOHOL ADS TARGET HISPANIC STUDENTS


Alcohol Ads Target Hispanic Students

Alcohol advertising is heavier around schools with more Hispanic students, according to a new study from the College of Education and the University of Florida's College of Medicine. Assistant Professor Keryn Pasch's research revealed that youth attending schools with 20 percent or more Hispanic students see an average of seven times more alcohol ads within 1,500 feet of their school each day than students at schools with a smaller Hispanic population.

$500,000 AWARD GIVEN TO FIGHT CLANDESTINE NUCLEAR ACTIVITY

As part of a broad international effort to eliminate the testing of nuclear weapons, University engineers have been awarded $511,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration to research better methods for monitoring and detecting covert nuclear tests. Associate Professor Steven Biegalski and Assistant Professor Mark Deinert, both of the Nuclear and Radiation Engineering Program, will work on how atmospheric xenon can be used to determine whether a country has conducted a nuclear test.
