Dazzling show makes a fashion statementThe dazzling lights, pageantry, music and glamor of high fashion runway shows are coming to campus with the spring 2006 annual Fashion Show from the Department of Human Ecology. Students from the Division of Textiles and Apparel will debut original fashion designs and present a divisional exposition at the Frank Erwin Center on April 21. The Textiles and Apparel exposition opens at 6 p.m. in the Lone Star Room. The fashion show begins at 8 p.m. in the arena. The event is free and open to the public. The Division of Textiles and Apparel in the Department of Human Ecology, College of Natural Sciences, presents the fashion show annually to showcase designs of graduating seniors in the apparel design program and to highlight research activity in the division. The event will include a runway presentation of 33 original fashion collections of daywear, evening wear and wedding gowns, and a preshow exposition focusing on programmatic research activity in the Division of Textiles and Apparel. Last year, the show drew more than 4,000 attendees, and an even bigger audience is expected this year. Prizes for Best Fashion Collection, Most Innovative Fashion Collection, Most Marketable Fashion Collection, Best Constructed Fashion Collection and Best Evening/Bridal Gown will be determined by a panel of judges composed of professionals in the fashion industry. The fashion show and exhibition are subsidized by the University Co-operative Society, along with donations from MAC Cosmetics and Pink Hair Salon and Gallery. Models are provided by Sue Webber Productions Inc. The show is considered a capstone experience for students in apparel design and retail merchandising and a stepping stone to future success in the fashion and retail industry. “Having worked on the show gives us all an edge in the business,” said Lindsey Platt, a 2002 merchandising graduate working at Bloomingdale’s in New York City. One of Platt’s former classmates, Cat Swanson, agrees. “This production simulates the true elements of real-world productions and self-promotion vital to all newcomers in the fashion industry,” said Swanson, who owns a New York-based design company. Other graduates are working at top design houses and retailing establishments that include Ann Klein, Donna Karan, Richard Tyler, Vera Wang, Nieman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. The show results from volunteer efforts of many individuals and groups, including the University Fashion Group, staff and faculty in the Department of Human Ecology. Volunteers assume diverse duties ranging from building sets and runways, coordinating promotional material, running cameras and lights, and dressing models backstage. Those who attend the show this year are invited to share in the spirit of the event and dress in their finest attire. “The magic and hope in the eyes of these young designers is truly inspirational,” said Stephen MacMillan Moser, fashion editor at the Austin Chronicle, who called the show the best place to see “fresh, young talent have a field day on the runway.”
