AUSTIN, Texas—The Charles A. Dana Center at The University of Texas at Austin has been awarded $515,185 in federal funds for a project to support mathematics teacher preparation in Texas.

The Dana Center will convene a statewide leadership team representing the diversity of Texas’ teacher certification institutions in November to develop a variety of resources for mathematics faculty who design programs that meet new state teacher certification standards.

As part of the Comprehensive Program in the U.S. Department of Education, The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education will finance 72 percent of the project costs, which total $715,515. The university will pay for the rest. The three-year project is titled Supporting and Strengthening Standards-based Mathematics Teacher Preparation (S3 MTP).

Dana Center officials also hope to expand opportunities for faculty leadership and collaboration among community colleges and four-year colleges and universities. Dr. Uri Treisman, University of Texas at Austin mathematics professor and director of the Dana Center, is the principal investigator for the S3 MTP project. It will be coordinated by Dr. Debbie Pace.

The Dana Center supports educational leaders and policy-makers in strengthening Texas education. As a research unit of the College of Natural Sciences, the Dana Center maintains a special emphasis on mathematics and science education.
