Incoming freshman class at The University of Texas at Austin to have highest academic qualifications, largest Hispanic representationJune 2, 2003 “This class is a great compliment to the hard work of the entire university community,” said Bruce Walker, director of admissions and associate vice president for student affairs. “We have never given up on our aspiration to have highly qualified and more representative freshmen classes since the loss of affirmative action.” Students admitted automatically under the “Top 10 Percent” Law will account for 69 percent of the freshman class and about 75 percent of the incoming freshmen listed as Texas residents. The Top 10 Percent Law (officially House Bill 588) guarantees that Texas high school graduates who rank in the top 10 percent of their senior class be admitted to any state institution of higher learning.
