University of Texas at Austin Alumnus Wins Tony Award for Lighting DesignJune 15, 2007 AUSTIN, Texas—University of Texas at Austin alumnus Kevin Adams, who earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatrical design in 1984, won a Tony Award on June 11 for best lighting design of a musical for "Spring Awakening." Adams' lighting design for the show included the use of colored compact fluorescent tubes and light bulbs—something no other designer has used before on Broadway. "This is one of those shows that everyone worked day and night on for a long, long time," Adams said. "It is extremely gratifying to see all that hard work recognized and rewarded." Adams attended The University of Texas at Austin as an undergraduate, studying scenic design with Theatre and Dance professors Bob Schmidt and John Rothgeb and visiting set designer Michael Sharp. Adams credits Lee Abraham's directing class, as well, for preparing him for his career in lighting design. Adams' other Broadway lighting design credits include "Latinologues" (2005), "The Good Body" (2004), "Take Me Out" (2003), "An Almost Holy Picture" (2001), "Hedda Gabler" (2001), "A Class Act" (2001) and "Getting and Spending" (1998).
