Social work professor honored for research paper

• Dr. Yolanda C. Padilla, associate professor of social work, has received the Outstanding Research Award for 2002 from the Society for Social Work and Research. The award recognized Padilla's work as the best scholarly publication by a social work author in the previous year. The paper was co-authored with Jennifer Glick of Arizona State University and is titled "Variations in the Economic Integration of Immigrant and U.S.-Born Mexicans."

University sponsors annual social work conference

• School-based social service professionals from around the state will gather in Austin Feb. 20-22 for the 11th Annual School Social Work Conference sponsored by The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work.  Participants represent several dozen Texas school districts. More than 20 workshops will be available on topics dealing with strategies and programs that are effective in working with youth and families. For more information, call (512) 471-8230.

Photography exhibit on display through April

Beyond the Tower: World Photographs by Recent Graduates of the College of Fine Arts and the College of Liberal Arts is on exhibit in the Gebauer Building, fourth floor gallery.  The collection will be on display through the end of April.

Symposium on neuroscience set for Feb. 16

• Dr. Bruce McEwen of Rockefeller University will be the keynote speaker at the Seventh Annual UT Symposium on Neuroscience, scheduled for 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Feb. 16, in the Applied Computational Engineering and Sciences Building. University speakers include Drs. Dennis McFadden, John Mihic, and Walter Wilczynski.

Journalism professor publishes book on newspaper industry

• A new book by George Sylvie, associate director of the School of Journalism, and Patricia D. Witherspoon focuses on newspapers as organizations, examining the role of change in the newspaper industry and providing a model from which to view and respond to change. The book, Time, Change, and the American Newspaper, discusses environmental and organizational influences on contemporary newspapers, and analyzes newspapers within the larger context of all organizations. 

Teaching assistant honored

• Judy Lai, a teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics, has been selected to receive a 2002 Texas Excellence Award for Graduate Instructors. The award is presented by the Texas Exes and recognizes Lai's outstanding efforts in achieving academic excellence in the College of Natural Sciences.

Visiting professor to deliver lecture on Feb. 22

• Dr. Anabel Ford, professor of anthropology and affiliate of the Mesoamerican Research Center, University of California at Santa Barbara, will give a public lecture at 4 p.m., Feb. 22, in the Geography Building, Room 102. The title of her talk is "Signatures Across the Landscape:  Creating the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve for Maya Flora and Fauna Belize-Guatemala." This lecture describes the effort to start a large, long-term, interdisciplinary program aimed at better understanding the complex dimensions of the human-environment relationship in the Maya forest. The talk is sponsored by the Department of Geography, Department of Anthropology and the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies.

New record retention schedule announced

• The Office of the Controller recently announced a new record retention schedule for the university. The new schedule is posted on the Office of the Controller Web site under Records Retention Schedule. The new schedule was certified by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission on Aug. 17, 2001, and supersedes any previously certified schedules. Departmentalized schedules also will be available on the Web in the near future. In the meantime, departments can request their individualized schedule from the Office of the Controller by contacting Angela Davis at 471-6392.

Concert, recording artist Christa Rakich to perform Feb. 17

• Christa Rakich, organist for the Jesuit Urban Center in Boston, Mass., performs on The University of Texas at Austin's Visser-Rowland tracker organ at 2 p.m., Feb. 17,  in Bates Recital Hall as part of the UT Great Organ Series. Tickets are available at the Bates Recital Hall door at 1 p.m. the afternoon of the performance for $14 and $10 students.  Call 475-8195 for more information.
