School of Law awards first Longhorn Legal Opportunity scholarships

Two newly admitted students to the University of Texas School of Law for fall 2002 are the first recipients of a new scholarship that covers tuition and fees for three years. The scholarship is available for students who were graduated from Texas high schools that have been historically underrepresented at the university.

Shelly Moreno, who was graduated in 1995 from St. Mary's University in San Antonio and worked for the U.S. Air Force after college, and Jamie An Wells, who will graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso in May, both accepted Longhorn Legal Opportunity scholarships. This award is funded by the Law School Foundation and is an extension of the Longhorn Opportunity Scholarship program, which was established in spring 1999.

The scholarship is designed to augment students' financial aid packages and to reduce the need for loans while enrolled at the law school. Recipients must have graduated from one of 64 Longhorn Opportunity Scholarship high schools and be accepted to the law school to qualify.

There is no restriction on the number of newly admitted law students who can receive this scholarship and no special process for applicants. Admitted applicants who meet the required criteria will be notified by letter after acceptance to the law school.

Ransom Chair lecture commemorates library education in Texas

• On April 18, the Graduate School of Library and Information Science will present the Ransom Chair Visiting Lecture and commemoration of the centenary of the organized study of professional librarianship in the state of Texas and at the university. The lecture will begin at 7 p.m. at the Thompson Conference Center Auditorium. With Dean Andrew Dillon presiding, President Larry R. Faulkner will introduce the evening with brief remarks, followed by several speakers. The Ransom Chair Visiting Lecture will be given by Dr. Wayne A. Wiegand of the School of Library and Information Management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, whose topic will be “Taking It Seriously: What American Studies Can Teach the Library and Information Community about American Culture.”

Legislative Update reviews mental health issues of Texas Legislature

• The Hogg Foundation for Mental Health is offering its Legislative Update: A Guide to the Mental Health-Related Actions of the 77th Texas Legislature free to consumers across the state. The publication draws upon the expertise of the state's leading mental health agencies and advocacy organizations — including the Mental Health Association in Texas, the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill-Texas, Advocacy Inc., and the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (TDMHMR) — to help improve the public's understanding of the nature and scope of recent changes in mental health issues and policies. The legislative changes addressed by the publication include housing, substance abuse, treatment of mentally ill criminal offenders, children's mental health, Medicaid eligibility and TDMHMR budget issues, among others. Applications being accepted for new Master's Portfolio Program in Gerontology

• Applications are being accepted for the newly established portfolio program in gerontology. The Master's Portfolio Program in Gerontology seeks to prepare students for academic research or practical careers in the field of gerontology. The program augments the existing Doctoral Portfolio Program in Gerontology, which was approved in spring 1998. The certificate program requires 12 credit hours distributed between foundation courses and elective seminars. Students may engage in aging research (basic or applied) or practicum with both well and frail older adults, and will be given credit for this course work as part of existing requirements in their major program of study. The Institute of Gerontology has more than 57 faculty affiliates from 22 departments in 10 schools and colleges to draw on for the Master’s Portfolio Program.
