HUNTINGTON ART GALLERY OPENS RE-ALIGNING VISION: ALTERNATIVE CURRENTS IN SOUTH AMERICAN DRAWING

On January 16, 1998, Re-Aligning Vision: Alternative Currents in South American Drawing opened at the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery. This pioneering exhibition was organized by the Huntington and was curated by UT graduate student Edith Gibson Wolfe and Curator of Latin American Art Mari Carmen Ramírez. "After the critical acclaim the exhibition received in New York and Arkansas, we are very excited to present this important show to University and Austin audiences," stated Jessie Otto Hite, Huntington Director.

Re-AligningVision explores the ascendancy of drawing as an alternative mode of expression in South America during the last three decades. It includes 137 drawings and four installations by 46 established artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Artists represented have consistently challenged the traditional definitions of the medium and extended its formal and conceptual boundaries through the innovative use of such basic materials as ink, charcoal, pencil and paper. They also manipulate non-conventional supports and techniques that include wood, marble, plastic, electric wires, cords, photography, industrial printing or reprographic processes.

Re-Aligning Vision is the first exhibition to offer an updated interpretation of this extraordinary body of artistic production to audiences in North and South America. Eighty-five percent of the works in the exhibition have never been seen in this country.

Mari Carmen Ramírez observes that "The artists and works represented in Re-Aligning Vision not only force a general reassessment of South American drawing but also bring attention upon the elusive status of contemporary drawing and the impossibility of circumscribing it to any particular definition." Edith A. Gibson further explains that, "The variety and degree of conceptual and stylistic experimentation of the works suggest that for many contemporary artists, including those from South America, drawing represents a strategy, rather than a genre, a means, or a set of stylistic conventions." Concentrating on the most innovative dimensions of drawing in the Southern Cone, Re-Aligning Vision moves beyond stereotypical representations of the art of this rich and complex, though frequently marginalized, region to present a broad spectrum of locally produced cutting-edge art.

Re-Aligning Vision will be on view through March 8, 1998. The Huntington has planned extensive interpretive programs during the exhibition, including talks by several South American artists. The program calendar, catalogue information, and sample images are available on the Re-Aligning Vision website at www.utexas.edu/cofa/hag/realign/.

Re-Aligning Vision has been supported in part by The Brazilian Ministry of External Relations, the Brazilian Ministry of Culture's Fundação Nacional de Arte (FUNARTE), and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The Huntington's presentation and interpretive programs are sponsored by the AT&T Foundation.
