Natchez on the Mississippi: Historic photographs of life in a Mississippi town exhibited at UT Austin's Center for American History

Steamboat J.M. White

The steamboat J.M. White was the grandest boat built on the Mississippi River during the years after the Civil War. It was enormous: 320 feet long and 91 feet wide. It was ornate, commodious, and luxurious. It set a standard never again equaled in the historic steamboat era. Built in 1878, the J.M. White caught fire at Blue Store Landing, Louisiana, in December 1886 and burned beyond repair.

Joseph Stern Horse and Mule Market

With his camera, Henry C. Norman, captured the town and countryside, including the important Joseph Stern Horse and Mule Market.
