The steamboat J.M. White was the grandest boat built on the Mississippi River during the years after the Civil War. It was enormous: 320 feet long and 91 feet wide. It was ornate, commodious, and luxurious. It set a standard never again equaled in the historic steamboat era. Built in 1878, the J.M. White caught fire at Blue Store Landing, Louisiana, in December 1886 and burned beyond repair.
