President Larry R. Faulkner visited with top academic seniors in Texas high schools recently to encourage them to apply for Longhorn Opportunity Scholarships designated for several schools throughout the state. Longhorn Opportunity Scholarships, provided by the University for the first time in 1999, offer participants $4,000 per year for up to four years if they maintain required grade levels. The 95 scholarships that were offered through the program to selected students starting classes in fall 1999 involved a $1.8 million commitment. "The University of Texas at Austin represents a world of opportunity. The Longhorn Opportunity Scholarships can help these students take full advantage of UT Austin's vast academic resources. We want high school students to consider UT Austin and to know that when they enroll, we will be there to help them undertake the educational adventure of a lifetime," said Faulkner. The president visited A. Maceo Smith High School, North Dallas High School and Wilmer-Hutchins High School in the Dallas area on Oct. 13, and on Oct. 25 he traveled to Houston to talk with seniors and juniors at Jack Yates High School, Booker T. Washington High School and Sterling High School. In mid-November he and a team of other UT Austin representatives will travel to San Antonio and work in two teams visiting students at Lanier High School, McCollom High School, Fox Tech High School, Harlendale High School, South San Antonio High School and Sam Houston High School. |
