James and Phyllis Doluisio have pledged $30,000 to match gifts of $250 and up to the Dr. Charles A. Walton Endowed Presidential Scholarship.
The scholarship is both a tribute to Dr. Walton's visionary leadership and a means continue his standard of excellence.
Dr. Walton is both a pioneer and an icon in the field of clinical pharmacy. In the 1970s, he was influential in redefining the role of the professional pharmacist as a vital member of the healthcare team and a drug therapy expert. James Doluisio, seeing the role that the college could play in this new era of pharmacy practice, invited Dr. Walton to come to The University of Texas in 1973. Together, they began to build the world-class pharmacy curriculum and the college's preeminent reputation that today's graduates enjoy.
Dr. Walton's illustrious career was a great boon to the growing College of Pharmacy. He was a collaborator in the establishment of the first Drug Information Center in the nation and later served as its director. He also helped introduce rational therapeutics into the pharmacy curriculum, and strongly advocated for clinical practice as a component of pharmacy education. In 1987, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy presented him with the Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award. In 1988, he retired from the college as associate dean and William J. Sheffield Centennial Professor Emeritus.
An endowed presidential scholarship is a fitting tribute to Dr. Walton's legacy. As the cost of tuition continues to rise and state support for The University of Texas continues to decline, scholarships provide much-needed support to deserving pharmacy students. They also help the college continue to attract the best and brightest students in the country. Because the corpus of an endowment is never spent, this scholarship will stay with the college in perpetuity, honoring Dr. Walton for many generations to come.
Graduates who have reaped the benefits of Dr. Walton's leadership are encouraged to show their gratitude to him and their support for pharmacy students by making a gift to the endowment. Dr. Doluisio's challenge grant will double the impact of your gift of $250 or more.
Be a visionary today: make a gift to the Dr. Charles A. Walton Endowed Presidential Scholarship.
