2009 23nd Annual Legends of Pharmacy Open
Previous Recipients of the Legend of Pharmacy Award

1989 - Joe Arnette
Joe Arnette Mr. Arnette, a 1949 graduate of the UT College of Pharmacy, served as executive director of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy from 1959 until his retirement in 1977. He served as a long time member of the Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council and was the founder of the Generations Club of the College. Mr. Arnette passed away on December 22, 1996.

1990 - William J. Sheffield, Ph.D.
JWilliam Sheffield Dr. Sheffield, earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina College of Pharmacy. In 1952, he joined the UT College of Pharmacy. He served as acting dean and associate dean of the College until 1973. He was admired and respected by students, faculty, staff and alumni of the College. The Outstanding Alumnus Award of the College is named in his honor. Dr. Sheffield passed away on November 29, 1990.

1991 - Bill Dismukes
Bill Dismukes Mr. Dismukes, a 1956 graduate of the UT College of Pharmacy, operated an independent pharmacy in Austin until 1997. He has served as a long time member of the Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council and is primarily responsible for raising more than $2.0 million in scholarships to support pharmacy students at The University of Texas. He is the founder of the Orange Coats at the College and is a member of the Generations Club. Mr. Dismukes is still active in his support of the college and continues to solicit funds for student scholarships.

1992 - Wm. Arlyn Kloesel, R.Ph.
Arlyn Kloesel Mr. Kloesel, a 1962 graduate of the UT College of Pharmacy, has served the College as a student leader, alumni, faculty, and staff. He has been honored for his commitment to students being named recipient of the Outstanding Advisor of the Texas Excellence in Teaching Award (1991-92), recipient of the Wm. J. Sheffield Outstanding Alumnus Award (1996) and the Texas Pharmacy Association's Distinguished Service Award (1996). The College's Preceptor of the Year Award is named in honor of Mr. Kloesel. He currently serves as a senior lecturer in the College's Division of Pharmacy Practice and Administration. He is retired from his College position as Assistant Dean/Director of Professional Affairs.

1993 - James T. Doluisio, Ph.D.
James Doluisio Dr. Doluisio served as dean of The University of Texas College of Pharmacy for 25 years. In 1994, Dean Doluisio was named the recipient of the American Pharmaceutical Association's Remington Honor Medal, pharmacy's highest honor. His reputation as one of the nation's leading pharmacists and deans of pharmacy was based upon his vision and leadership. In 1996, he was named as one of the top 10 most influential leaders in pharmacy in America.

1994 - Louis W. Schleuse
Louis Schleuse Mr. Schleuse graduated from The UT College of Pharmacy in 1925. He joined the faculty of the College in 1928. In 1943, Schleuse received a year's leave of absence to pursue work with Texas Pharmacal Company, a San Antonio-based drug-manufacturing firm. He joined Texas Pharmacal in 1945 and developed a line of more than 50 dermatologic and cosmetic products, the best known of which were Lubriderm and Cetaphil Lotions and Allercreme Cosmetics. Mr. Schleuse died on June 14, 1995.

1995 - Jaime N. Delgado, Ph.D
Jaime Delgado A former faculty member at The University of Texas College of Pharmacy, Dr. Delgado received his B.S. in pharmacy from UT in 1954, his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota. He joined the faculty at the UT College of Pharmacy in 1959. He is a five-time recipient of the Texas Excellence in Teaching Award and in 1997 was elected to the University's Academy of Distinguished Teachers. The Jaime N. Delgado Endowed Presidential Scholarship was established in his name in 1995 by one of his former students, Dr. David B. Garcia.

1996 - Gilbert Satterwhite
Gilbert Satterwhite Mr. Satterwhite graduated from The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1978. He served as president of the UT Pharmacy Alumni Association in 1998-89 and was past president of the Tarrant County Pharmaceutical Association. At the time of his untimely death in 1995, Mr. Satterwhite was serving on the Board of Directors of the Texas Pharmacy Association. The Gilbert Satterwhite Memorial Endowed Scholarship was establish in his memory at the College of Pharmacy in 1996.

1997 - Eugene Vykukal
Eugene Vykukal Mr. Vykukal, a 1952 graduate, has had a very distinguished career in pharmacy and in the wholesale drug industry. He retired as senior vice president from Bergen Brunswig in 1991. He was a recipient of the U.T. College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumni Award and recipient of the Wm. J. Sheffield Outstanding Alumnus Award. He has served as chair for the UT Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council, chair of the National Wholesale Druggists Association, and Assistant Dean for Development for the College.

1998 - Alan Hamm
Alan Hamm Alan Hamm received his B.S. from The University of Texas College of Pharmacy in 1954. He is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of United Provider Services, a Prescription Benefit Management Company, founded in 1986. From 1959-1992, he was the owner of Town & Country Drug Stores. He has maintained membership in the Texas Longhorn Education Foundation, NACDS, Tarrant County Pharmaceutical Association, National Council of Prescription Drug Programs, and NCPA. Alan has established two named Endowed Presidential Scholarships in Pharmacy. He is currently a member and past president of the UT Pharmaceutical Advisory Board, a member of the UT Chancellor's Council, UT Littlefield Society and UT Alumni Association.

1999 - Charles Walton

Charles Walton Charles A. Walton, Ph.D. received his B.S. degree in pharmacy in 1949 at Auburn University and later earned his Master's and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University. Dr. Walton joined The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy in 1973 and served as professor and assistant dean with a joint appointment in the Department of Pharmacology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was a collaborator in the establishment of the first Drug Information Center in the nation and later served as its Director. In 1987, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy presented Dr. Walton with the Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award. He retired in 1988 and holds the title of William J. Sheffield Centennial Professor Emeritus. Dr. Walton and his wife, Joyce, live in Titus, Alabama.


2000 - Hazel M. Pipkin
Hazel Pipkin Ms. Pipkin, an independent pharmacy owner in Bryan, Texas, continues her practice of pharmacy while also serving as Clinical Professor in the Pharmacy Practice and Administration division at the U.T. College of Pharmacy in Austin. Her service to the College includes emeritus membership on the Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council, serving as coordinator for the non-traditional master's degree program in Pharmacy Administration and Management, and a long history of financial support of student scholarships and the Pharmaceutical Foundation. She served as President of TPA and Speaker of the House for APhA, and she has received numerous distinguished awards, including APhA's Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award and the Kappa Epsilon Vanguard Leadership Award.

2001 - Bob Gude

Bob Gude A 1952 graduate of the UT College of Pharmacy, Bob Gude took his dream of pharmacy practice and molded it into Eastern Hills Pharmacy of Fort Worth, one of the leading independent pharmacies in Texas. He has served in leadership roles in pharmacy organizations at many levels including his tenure as president of the Texas Pharmacy Association in 1987-88. Within the UT College of Pharmacy he accumulated a total of 12 years of service as a member of the Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council fulfilling terms in 1980-83 and again in 1989-1998. In July 1988, he founded the Pharmacy Freedom Fund (PFF), leading a group of independent pharmacy owners as they pursued a course of justice against discriminatory pricing practices within the pharmaceutical industry. Under the leadership of Bob Gude, the PFF grew into a national grass roots movement that eventually resulted in financial compensation for literally thousands of pharmacists who had been disadvantaged by the pricing practices. Many of the pharmacists who benefited from Gude's tireless efforts with the PFF, in turn have honored Bob and Mary by contributing to and establishing the Bob and Mary Gude Excellence Endowment within the UT College of Pharmacy.


2002 - Jean Sheffield

Jean Sheffield graduated from the College of Pharmacy in 1951. She began her career as a pharmacist at the University of Texas Student Health Center and went on to become the Senior Director of the Pharmacy Recovery Network with Texas Pharmacy Association. Ms. Sheffield was instrumental in implementing several innovative programs of benefit to the pharmacists in Texas, including the TPA Committee on Pharmacists Rehabilitation. Ms. Sheffield has been devoted to helping drug and alcohol dependent pharmacists, pharmacy students, and their families seek professional assistance to overcome this debilitating condition. Ms. Sheffield has volunteered as a preceptor for the University of Texas College of Pharmacy and remains a member of The Southwest Pharmacist Recovery Network. In 1989, she was awarded the American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Merit Award. In 1996, the Texas Pharmacy Association awarded her their Exceptional Service Award, and in 2001 the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and other Drug Dependencies named her Outstanding Alumna. She has served as editor for the TPA Speedletter, PRN Quarterly Newsletter and several local and state officials' newsletters.


2003 - Lonnie Hollingsworth

Lonnie F. Hollingsworth, Sr. is recognized at the 2003 Legend of Pharmacy recipient for his contributions to pharmacy and pharmacy education. Mr. Hollingsworth has an extensive resume with numerous honors and involvement in almost every professional pharmacy association in the state and the nation. However, the most appropriate item on that resume refers to a title he held in the military - "Storekeeper First Class." Mr. Hollingsworth has been a champion of community pharmacy since 1959 when he opened L&H Drugs in Lubbock, Texas. He has served in offices in the West Texas Pharmaceutical Association, the Texas Pharmaceutical Association, the National Association of Retail Druggists, The Pharmacy Freedom Fund, and Community Pharmacy Foundation and as interim director of the Texas Pharmacy Association. Among his many honors is the "Bowl of Hygeia," from The Texas Pharmacy Association, Heritage Award, and Pharmacist of the Hour, from the West Texas Pharmaceutical Association, and Outstanding Achievement in the Profession of Pharmacy from Merck, Sharp & Dohme.


2004 - John Carson

This award recognizes an individual whose contributions to pharmacy or pharmacy education have been "legendary."   John Carson's years of service and commitment to the pharmacy field led to his nomination of   the Legend of Pharmacy award.   Mr. Carson held state and national leadership positions including serving as President for both the Texas Pharmacy Association and the National Community Pharmacists Association.  He has been active on the Pharmaceutical Foundation's Advisory Council and has served as a preceptor for pharmacy students.   In addition, Mr. Carson's pharmacy, Oakdell Pharmacy, piloted a residency in community practice in conjunction with the College.   His well-reputed pharmacy staff is exemplar in carrying out professional services.  Mr. Carson's tremendous devotion to the practice of pharmacy makes him a true leader in the field.  


2005 - Fred S. Brinkley, Jr., R.Ph., M.B.A.

Fred Brinkley Fred S. Brinkley, Jr. received a of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of Texas at Austin, attended Drake University's Graduate School of Public Administration, and received his Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Brinkley began his career as a community pharmacist in San Antonio where he also served as a professional service representative for E. R. Squibb & Sons, Inc. From 1969 to 1972, he held a joint appointment as Director of Public Affairs of the Texas Pharmaceutical Association and Assistant to the Dean of the University of Texas College of Pharmacy. During this time, he also served as Director of the National Drug Abuse Education Training Center in San Antonio, a cooperative effort of The University of Texas College of Pharmacy and The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio. In 1972, Mr. Brinkley accepted an appointment from Iowa's governor, Robert D. Ray, as Director of the Iowa Drug Abuse Authority, an independent executive agency located within the Iowa Governor's office. He served in this position until 1976 when he accepted an appointment as Executive Director of the Texas State Board of Pharmacy, a position he held for two decades. Mr. Brinkley is presently Vice President of Professional Affairs for Medco Health Solutions, Inc., a position he has held since July 1997. Mr. Brinkley is a member of the Capitol Area Pharmaceutical Association, Texas Pharmacy Association, American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the Texas and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Academy of Managed Care Pharmacists, American Society for Pharmacy Law, National Community Pharmacists Association, Kappa Psi, and Phi Lambda Sigma. He has served as a member-at-large of the United States Pharmacopial Convention and as a member of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. In 1993 Mr. Brinkley received the "William J. Sheffield Outstanding Alumnus" Award from The University of Texas at Austin, College of Pharmacy Alumni Association, was honored in 2000 by the Texas Pharmacy Association as the "2000 Pharmacist of the Year," and received the 2005 "Legends of Pharmacy" award from the U.T. College of Pharmacy Alumni Association. He is also a member and recently completed a four year term as Chairman of the University of Texas Pharmaceutical Foundation Advisory Council.


2006 - Louis C. (Cliff) Littlefield, Pharm.D.

Cliff Littlefield Cliff Littlefield received a B.A. in Biology from California State University at Northridge in 1963 and his Pharm.D. from the University of Southern California in 1967.

Following five years of hospital pharmacy practice, he completed a Clinical Pharmacy Residency at the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center in 1973. Cliff joined the UT Austin College of Pharmacy faculty in August 1973 and he played an instrumental role in the development of the Pharm.D. Program that was administered jointly by the College and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio.

From 1981 to August 2004, Cliff has served as a Division Head, an Assistant Dean and an Associate Dean within the College of Pharmacy. Currently, he is the William J. Sheffield Centennial Professor of Pharmacy and Director of the Hispanic Center of Excellence. He has served on numerous committees and task forces within the College, the University of Texas, and the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. In addition, he has served twice as a Co-Chair of the ACPE Accreditation Self-Study Steering Committee. He received the College's Teaching Excellence Award in 1982, holds elected membership in Phi Lambda Sigma, and was selected as the 2005-06 Robert G. Leonard Memorial Lecturer.

Over the past 15 years, Cliff has accounted for more than $4.2 million in grants and contracts of which almost $2.6 million supported the development of programs in South Texas and along the Texas-Mexico Border. He served as a member of the UT System Texas-Mexico Border Health Services Advisory Committee from July 1992 to August 2002 and, for the past three years, has served as a member of the U.S. Mexico Border Hispanic Center of Excellence Consortium. Cliff has held elected office and served on committees for AACP, ASHP, TPA, TSHP and the Bexar County Pharmaceutical Association. He has served on the editorial boards of Clinical Pharmacy and Journal of Pediatric Health Care, contributed chapters to two textbooks and published several professional and scientific articles and abstracts.


2007 - Steven W. Leslie, Ph.D.

Steven W. Leslie Dr. Steven W. Leslie received his B.S. in Pharmacy in 1969, M.S. in Pharmacology/Toxicology in 1972 and Ph.D. in Pharmacology/Toxicology in 1974. All degrees were received at Purdue University. He joined the faculty of the College of Pharmacy, The University of Texas at Austin, as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pharmacology in 1974, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1979, and to Professor in 1984. Dr. Leslie was appointed as the Sublett Professor in the College of Pharmacy from 1986-1989 and is currently the holder of the Bauerle Centennial Professorship, which he has held since 1989. Appointed as Dean of the College of Pharmacy and the James T. Doluisio Regents Chair from 1998-2007, Dr. Leslie was appointed as Executive Vice President and Provost at The University of Texas at Austin in January 2007.

Recognized for his career accomplishments by the awarding of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue University in 1994, Dr. Leslie has also received special recognition for his research accomplishments. He is a past recipient of an NIH Research Scientist Development Award and an NIH MERIT award. Dr. Leslie's research interests involved the study of the role of the NMDA subtype of glutamate receptors on neuronal development as well as studies on the effects of fetal alcohol exposure on NMDA receptors and brain development. In 1997, Dr. Leslie was honored to receive the Exceptional Service Award from the Texas Pharmacy Association, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Research Society on Alcoholism.

Dr. Leslie has served in numerous administrative capacities at The University of Texas at Austin. He was the founder and Director of the Institute for Neuroscience (1986-1992), a University-wide interdisciplinary research institute composed of approximately 60 faculty in 6 colleges. Dr. Leslie has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Research Society on Alcoholism and as a member of the Medical Advisory Council of the Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation, and as a member of their Board of Trustees. He has published approximately 100 peer reviewed scientific articles relevant to the areas of neuropharmacology and alcohol research.
