About the Campaign: College of Pharmacy, UT Austin
Redefining Excellence | Our Priorities | Helping the College | The Campaign

Redefining Excellence

Founded in 1893, The University of Texas College of Pharmacy is synonymous with excellence in pharmacy -- not just in Texas -- but throughout the United States and around the world. Consistently ranked among the preeminent colleges of pharmacy in the country, we continue to excel in preparing the best and brightest students for challenging careers as clinicians and scientists, while improving the health care of all Texans through the discovery and development of life-saving medications. But, being "among the best" is not good enough. By "redefining excellence" in the years ahead, we will set a new standard - not just for our own students, faculty and staff -- but for other colleges of pharmacy to follow.

Our Priorities

Making the best students even better. Graduates from our college are among the most sought after and best-prepared professionals entering pharmacy today. Yet, to continue to deliver a higher education experience "of the first class," we must become even more competitive in our recruitment and provide a supportive, nurturing learning environment that is second to none, including contemporary classrooms and laboratory facilities, the latest technologies, and scholarship and fellowship support. At the heart of our College is one of the most innovative pharmacy curricula in the country today - firmly rooted in the pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacotherapeutics, and pharmacy administration - resulting in graduates that are uniquely qualified to safely and effectively manage drug therapy of the patients they serve.

In addition, our College has made a strong commitment to enrich the education and preparation of our students through professional development and community service opportunities. Together, we will ensure that our graduates remain a vital force within the profession and an invaluable resource to their patients.

World class research initiatives that make a difference. Our commitment to research in the basic pharmaceutical sciences, clinical therapeutics, and the delivery of pharmacy services has led to significant advances in drug development and discovery, as well as improvements in the cost and quality of health care. Not only does this important research lead to new treatments for devastating illness and disease, it is also critical to the overall mission of our College and our academic programs. A solid research program helps to attract and retain the best researchers, instructors, and graduate students, while enhancing our competitiveness for limited public research funds to support faculty and students. Research initiatives remain a cornerstone of our mission and, with your help, will continue to make a difference in the lives of all Texans.

Helping the College to Redefine Excellence

The College of Pharmacy seeks your support to fund the following initiatives to help make the best students even better.

Scholarships and Fellowships. The College of Pharmacy seeks private support to double the number of available scholarships for students of outstanding merit and/or financial need. Additional scholarship and graduate fellowship endowments will enable the College to be even more competitive in recruiting the best and brightest students, while making an outstanding pharmacy education an affordable reality for future generations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Simply put, we want to attract the best talent to the College and then provide the resources necessary to help them succeed.

Student Professional Development Fund. Providing our students with professional enrichment opportunities has long been a hallmark of our College. A solid professional orientation goes beyond the classroom and laboratory and must include exposure to today's thought leaders, technological trends, innovations, business practices, and other developments that are profoundly changing the landscape of pharmacy practice. One of our top priorities is to position our students at the forefront of this dynamic change through the establishment of a $2 million Student Professional Development Endowment. This endowed fund will enhance our ability to enable students to participate in seminars, conferences, training programs, and public service activities at the local, state, and national level, thus better preparing them for a more rewarding professional career.

To support and advance research initiatives that make a difference in the lives of Texans, the College seeks private support of several high-priority research initiatives. From the basic pharmaceutical sciences of medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and toxicology to the applied disciplines of clinical therapeutics, pharmacy practice and administration, and pharmacoeconomics and outcomes management -- the University of Texas College of Pharmacy is leading the way in discovery and innovation. The enormous scope of our research programs span the continuum of drug development - from discovery, design and formulation to clinical evaluation, delivery, utilization, and outcome assessment. But to continue our quest to unlock the mysteries of devastating illnesses and disease such as cancer, heart disease, mental illness, alcoholism, and many more, we must renew our commitment to research and graduate education. To accomplish this, we seek your support to expand several key interdisciplinary research programs, including:

Center for Molecular and Cellular Toxicology. Although the College of Pharmacy is already recognized as one of the nation's preeminent institutions for the study of toxicology, the newly created Center for Molecular and Cellular Toxicology seeks funding to strengthen the College's research and graduate education programs in this important field. Additional resources will enable the Center to more broadly publicize its research findings and to aid both public policy makers and private industry alike in assessing environmental pollution and its effects on the human body.

Institute for Neuroscience. This interdisciplinary, broad-based institute examines the impact of molecular, cellular, behavioral, and psychological factors on brain function. The greatest advances in medical science to take place over the coming generations will be in the area of brain disorders and disease such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and alcoholism. Accordingly, the College seeks funding to expand the number of researchers and graduate students working in this important frontier.

Center for Pharmacoeconomic Studies. In response to the growing national concern about the rising costs of pharmaceutical products and services, the College created the Center for Pharmacoeconomic Studies in 1994. The Center has facilitated unprecedented collaboration among researchers from many disciplines and has capitalized upon the College's strong clinical and pharmacy administration research programs. The College is seeking private support to expand the Center and elevate its profile as a leading authority in this critically important and rapidly evolving scientific discipline.
