Biographical Sketch
David S. Burgess earned a BS in biology and chemistry (1984)
from Murray State University, BS in Pharmacy (1987) from the University
of Kentucky and his Pharm.D. (1990) from the Medical University
of South Carolina. He completed a residency in Critical Care/Surgery
(1991) and an Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Fellowship (1994)
at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is currently Clinical
Professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy at the University
of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and the Pharmacotherapy Research
and Education Center at the University of Texas Health Science
Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Burgess is an active member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), American Society for Microbiology
(ASM), Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA), International Society for Anti-Infective Pharmacology (ISAP), and the
Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists (SIDP). He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of Infectious
Diseases Pharmacists and editorial board of the Journal of Infectious Disease Pharmacotherapy . Dr. Burgess also
serves as a scientific reviewer for numerous pharmacy and medical journals and served as an infectious disease faculty
member for the Texas Medical Foundation Community-Acquired Pneumonia Collaborative. In 2002, he was selected as a
NIAAA faculty trainer to attend the Saint-Petersburg State Pavlov Medical University in St. Petersburg, Russia. Dr. Burgess
is a past recipient of the 1995, 2003, and 2004 Research Award from the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists. In 2004,
he was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (FCCP). Dr. Burgess has served as the supervisor or
major professor for 2 graduate students who won the best M.S. thesis on campus at the University of Texas at Austin in 2003 and 2004.
Dr. Burgess has been the preceptor or co-preceptor for more than 20 specialty practice residents and clinical sciences
fellows and served as the supervisor or major professor for seven M.S. in Pharmacy students. He has authored numerous scientific
and professional articles in the area of infectious disease as well as lectured nationally and internationally on microbiology,
pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and infectious diseases pharmacotherapy.
Research Interest
My research interests lie in the area of infectious disease clinical, laboratory, and translational research due to bacteria
and fungus. My group is focused on understanding the mechanisms of resistance, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and outcomes
of antibacterial and antifungal pharmacotherapy. This is being accomplished by evaluating the
- in vitro activity of antifungal and antimicrobial agents alone and in combination for the treatment of serious fungal
infections, gram-positive pathogens and gram-negative pathogens such as P. aeruginosa , Acinetobacter ,
and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producing Klebsiella,
- pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of antifungal and antimicrobials in vitro and in vivo,
- epidemiology of anti-infective resistance, anti-infective usage patterns and the relationships between resistance,
anti-infective usage, and pharmacodynamics.
- outcomes of disease state management programs which we developed and implemented for infectious diseases.
Finally, we enjoy providing education and training to healthcare professionals and the general public about the appropriate
and rational use of anti-infectives
Teaching Responsibilities
My major teaching responsibilities are in the professional and graduate program with a focus on microbiology, pharmacology of
anti-infectives, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of anti-infectives, and pharmacotherapeutics of infectious diseases. In addition,
I serve as a preceptor for professional students,
residents,
fellows,
and
graduate students
on both clinical rotations at University Hospital and
the infectious diseases research rotation in the
Center for Advancement of Research and Education in Infectious Diseases.
