This experience is designed to provide extensive and comprehensive training for individuals that have a strong interest in community and clinical pharmacy practice. Alameda Thrifty Pharmacy is a family owned and operated business established in 1958. It is the preferred pharmacy used by El Paso Mental Health Mental Retardation (MHMR) patients and stores a high volume of psychotropic medications. They have recently moved into a new pharmacy building equipped with ample room for private consultation with patients. They envision setting the pace in El Paso for providing clinical pharmacy services. Costco is a membership warehouse club, dedicated to bringing their members the best possible prices on quality brand-name merchandise. Their operating philosophy has been simple. Keep costs down and pass the savings on to our members. The pharmacy at Costco offers a wide variety of non-prescription drugs, eye care products, vitamins, herbal remedies and prescription medications. The El Paso pharmacy has a consultation room, designated for private visits with their members.
This experience will expose the resident to pharmacy management at both pharmacies, disease state management that encompasses but not limited to: Asthma, Diabetes, Hypertension, Hyperlipidemia, Medication Therapy Management, Smoking Cessation, and Thyroid Disorders. Other opportunities include obtaining a teaching certificate, providing health care for the homeless and rural populations, and electives with other sites that would include the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team of doctors, nurse practitioners, health educators and promotoras (community health workers). Upon completion of training, the resident will be able to seek a pharmacy management position in a community practice, a clinical position in ambulatory care and/or seek an academic appointment.
